πŸ• HAPPY FRIDAY, VICTORIA! πŸ•

And really… what says Friday better than pizza night? πŸ˜‹

For our August Community Spotlight, we're shining some love on a local favourite: Cosmos Pizza & Pasta! πŸ’™

August is all about activities, engagement, and connection - and sometimes connection looks as simple as sharing a really good meal!

Food has an incredible way of bringing people together.

😊 Or that wonderfully easy dinner everyone can agree on after a long week

For older adults especially, those everyday moments of connection matter. Sharing a meal creates space for conversation, laughter, stories, memories and, most importantly, time together.

That's one of the things we appreciate about local businesses like Cosmos Pizza & Pasta. Bringing people together doesn't have to be complicated - order everyone's favourites, pull up a chair, and enjoy each other's company!

We believe some of life's most meaningful moments happen in the simplest ways - and quite a few of them happen over good food! πŸ’™

So here's to Friday night, good pizza, and the people we share it with. πŸ•πŸ₯°

Thank you, Cosmos Pizza & Pasta, for feeding Victoria and making those shared moments a little more delicious.

Joy isn't just a nice feeling. Science says it's actually good medicine.

In a landmark study published in Psychosomatic Medicine, researchers at Carnegie Mellon University found that people who regularly experience positive emotions (happiness, calm, and a sense of well-being). They were significantly less likely to get sick when exposed to a cold virus, and reported fewer symptoms when they did. The same research linked positive emotional style to lower cortisol levels and reduced inflammation, two key factors in healthy aging.

Put simply: Having a good time is good for you!

At Senior Helpers, our Companion Care service is built around exactly that idea. Our caregivers get to know each client's personality, interests, and favorite activities. They plan visits around the things that bring them joy. Whether that's a morning walk, a card game, a shared meal, or just good conversation over coffee, we're here to make sure the seniors we care for are living fully, not just safely.

Because a joyful day isn't a bonus. It's part of the plan. πŸ’›

Today would have been Pops' 98th birthday. πŸ’œ

Not a day goes by that I don't think about him.

He was an old English gentleman through and through. Sharp, witty, unbelievably cheeky, and fiercely independent. He never talked about getting old because, in his mind, he simply wasn't.

As a family, we watched dementia slowly change him.

We watched my dad and his brothers, my mom and my aunts, become caregivers in ways none of us ever expected.

We watched him hand over his driver's license, even though it represented so much of his independence.

We watched him recover from a hip replacement. Then, a few years later, from a fractured pelvis after deciding to walk to the corner store for a chocolate bar.

He'd lived with diabetes for most of his life, which somehow made the whole thing even more "Pops." He'd lost his license and wasn't about to let that stop him from getting where he wanted to go.

Like so many families, we learned that navigating the later years of life isn't always straightforward. Sometimes what people need most is simply a little extra support, a little extra time, and someone who can help preserve their independence for as long as possible.

One of the greatest gifts we gave Pops was a little extra support when he needed it most.

Looking back now, I realize it gave our whole family something too: peace of mind.

By the end, dementia had taken away my name.

He couldn't always tell you who I was.

But he always knew I was one of his girls.

My sister and I had Sundays with Pops.

We'd take him for coffee, lunch, scenic drives, or long walks, always arm in arm. We were his girls, and he was our guy. Those afternoons are some of the most treasured memories of my life.

When the time came, our family brought him home from hospital because we knew exactly where he wanted to be. Home. Surrounded by the people who loved him.

People sometimes ask why my husband and I chose to open Senior Helpers.

We each have our own story.

For me, it's Pops.

Not because dementia was part of his story.

But because I experienced firsthand how the right support can preserve the moments that matter most.

It's the coffee dates.

The drives.

The walks.

The companionship.

The dignity of staying at home.

The relief it brings to families.

I think about him every single day, and I often wonder how much we could have helped if we'd been doing this back then.

Every family we have the privilege of supporting reminds me, in some small way, of Pops. He shaped the way I see this work, and the kind of care I hope we're able to provide every single day.

Happy 98th Birthday, Pops.

Miss you guy, and I hope we're making you proud. πŸ’œ

πŸ’™ Caregiver Spotlight: Meet Charlie

At Senior Helpers Victoria, we know great care starts with great people!

This month, we're excited to introduce you to Charlie.

For Charlie, caregiving is guided by one simple philosophy:

"Treat others the way you wish to be treated." πŸ’œ

It's a simple idea, but one that shines through in every visit she makes.

Charlie loves getting to know each person she supports and meeting them where they are, whether they need a helping hand, a listening ear, or simply someone who will sit beside them and make the day a little brighter. β˜€οΈ

She understands that caregiving isn't just about helping with daily tasks.

It's about building trust.

It's about preserving dignity.

It's about encouraging independence.

It's about helping people feel seen, respected, and valued. 🌿

When she's not caring for clients, you'll often find Charlie spending time with her two horses, Freddie and Indigo. 🐴 Anyone who knows horses understands they have a remarkable way of teaching patience, compassion, and quiet connection. Those same qualities are part of what make Charlie such a wonderful caregiver!

We're incredibly grateful to have Charlie as part of the Senior Helpers Victoria family.

πŸ’™ Thank you, Charlie, for the kindness, professionalism, and genuine compassion you bring to every client and every visit.
