Today (March 31st) is International Transgender Day of Visibility. It is such an honour when I am given the opportunity to provide gender-affirming voice supports, to be given that depth of trust in such a vulnerable area is extremely humbling. To all my clients, friends and anyone who continues to face hate, fear, anger or transphobia; I see you, I respect you and your journey, I wish you love, hope and freedom to be your authentic self. 🩵🩷🤍🩷🩵

This has been central to my own learning as a Speech-Language Pathologist, and then educating parents over the last year. The tongue is such an important part of the body, and provides so much information as well as guiding the development of the mouth, brain and core muscles of the body. I love sharing my perspective on the tongue, breathing and sleep, jaw and dental development, and how it all links to speech, language and academic development. Fascinating stuff.

Children who have trouble paying attention, don’t learn well, or have poor impulse control are behaviors commonly associated with ADHD.

Or, are they really signs of lack of sleep?

Whether it’s sleep, or ADHD, for parents and clinicians, the two issues can be hard to separate.

For a start, the most common treatment for ADHD, is to prescribe a stimulant, Ritalin.

ADHD is a disorder that begins in childhood and encompasses symptoms of inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity.

These symptoms interfere with functioning at school, at work, and in social situations. ADHD is present in approximately 5% of children, and it is more common in boys.

An estimated 25 to 50% of people with ADHD experience sleep problems, ranging from insomnia to secondary sleep conditions.

Doctors are starting to connect the importance of treating sleep problems and the impact this can have on both ADHD symptoms and quality of life for ADHD patients and their families.

The big issue may be that sleep disorders are likely underdiagnosed in children. Physicians depend on polysomnography that use parameters that are only diagnosed, when obstructive sleep apnea is detected.

That requires an AHI (apnea hypopnea index) to reach a certain threshold, ie. the child has to stop breathing for long enough.

In a functional dental examination, sleep disorders are screened for through a broad set of symptoms and anatomical presentations.

It allows for additional information to identify the risk of airway resistance, hopefully before any sleep condition can reach apnea.

These may include:

• Narrow high palate
• Open mouth posture
• Mouth breathing
• Snoring
• Crooked teeth
• Underbite or overbites
• Teeth grinding
• Bed wetting
• Day time sleepiness
• Dark circles under eyes

If your child has one of these signs, and you suspect it’s affecting their performance at school, they may be suffering from a breathing related sleep disorder.

Does your child show any of these signs?

Gender-Affirming Voice and Communication Training

Our style of communication with others is an intimate and unique expression of ourselves, and our voice and communication often reflect our identity as much as our appearance. As a result, regardless of where a person is in their journey of self-expression, the feeling that their voice or communication does not accurately reflect their authentic self can be devastating.

Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) with training in gender-affirming voice and communication can support their clients in modifying their voice and communication behaviours safely, in order to move towards expression of their authentic self. We aim to empower our clients through collaboration to find a voice and communicative style that truly reflects the self they know. This may include pitch modification, voice quality, resonance, breath support, inflection, and non-verbal communication, among other areas. Working together, the clinician and client can choose which aspects of voice and communication they want to alter to align with their true identity.

If you are interested in learning more about how to find your most authentic voice, and keeping your voice safe and healthy while you do, I would love to hear from you. Working together, we can find a voice and communication style that feels both safe and authentic, that reflects your gender identity and is congruent with your self-expression.

You can reach me by email at [email protected], or through Facebook Speech, Language & Learning.

Summer is nearly here, and thank goodness! 😂 June is always crazy busy in the schools, children and staff are tired and ready for a break. But how do you stop the ‘Summer slide’ in your child’s speech and language growth?

I am excited to have two days a week in my Warman clinic starting to fill up for Speech and Language supports through the Summer months, and will once again be able to offer services in Delisle at the health centre. If you have a child that could use some fun and motivating speech therapy over the break, drop me a line! The education system is running on terribly reduced service, and your child is likely not getting the support they need to remediate speech errors.

I am able to provide receipts for reimbursement through your benefits, and I am very happy to work with the schools if requested. If you have questions, want to chat and see if this is right for you and your child, or are interested in more information, shoot me a message or email [email protected].

Have a fabulous Summer!! 🌞
