Anxiety can make trying something new feel overwhelming. One way to think about facing anxiety is by understanding the different "zones" we move through as we learn and gain new experiences:
Your comfort zone is where things feel familiar and predictable. There's nothing wrong with spending time here; it helps us rest and recharge. But the comfort zone is not where we learn or grow.
Your growth zone is just outside of the comfort zone. It might feel uncomfortable or bring up some anxiety, but it's also where confidence is built. As you practise doing hard things in manageable steps, those feelings of anxiety often become easier to handle, and your comfort zone gradually expands.
The panic zone is different. This is what happens when we take on something that feels too overwhelming. Instead of learning, we're more likely to shut down or avoid the situation altogether.
This idea is a big part of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT). Strategies like exposure and behavioural experiments are designed to help you take small, achievable steps into your growth zone, not throw you into the deep end.
