Gardening is one of our favorite spring OT activities because it naturally builds fine motor skills, bilateral coordination, gross motor strength, sensory processing, and emotional regulation—all while kids have FUN 🌱🌼

Whether it’s planting seeds in a cup or digging in the backyard, nature offers endless opportunities for skill building.

What will you plant this spring?

Not all barriers are visible 💙

During National Accessibility Week, we’re shining a light on hidden barriers that can make everyday life more challenging — and how small changes can make a big difference 🌈
🧠 Cognitive Barriers: Trouble remembering steps, staying focused, or processing information can make daily routines feel overwhelming.
😔 Mental Health Barriers: Anxiety, depression, or stress can quietly limit participation, motivation, and confidence.
🌈 Sensory Barriers: Bright lights, loud sounds, or certain textures can cause overload or distress — even in everyday environments.
💬 Communication Barriers: Difficulty understanding or expressing needs can make connection and inclusion harder.
⏰ Executive Functioning Barriers: Challenges with planning, organizing, or shifting between tasks can make independence tricky.
❤️ Energy & Fatigue Barriers: Chronic fatigue, pain, or burnout can limit stamina for daily activities, even when someone “looks fine.”
👣 Environmental Barriers: Busy, cluttered, or overstimulating spaces can quietly block access and participation.
Accessibility isn’t just about ramps — it’s about recognizing and removing all barriers, seen and unseen 💙

May’s Life Skill of the Month: Organizing a Picnic Bag! 🌞

This fun, practical activity builds executive function, organization, and problem-solving skills — while encouraging independence and real-world application.
Here’s how to turn it into a mini learning opportunity:

Step 1: Plan it out 🧠
Ask: “What do we need for our picnic?”
Encourage your child or students to make a list — food, drinks, blanket, sunscreen, napkins, etc.

Step 2: Sort and pack 🧺
Lay everything out and decide what goes where. Discuss:
• Heavy items on the bottom?
• What should stay cool or dry?
• How can we make it easy to carry?

Step 3: Check and reflect 🌞
Before leaving, do a quick checklist review — what did we forget? What worked well?
Reflection builds planning awareness and flexibility for next time.
✨ Skill focus:
• Sequencing
• Categorizing
• Decision-making
• Working memory
• Real-life problem solving

Please welcome Tara Roughley to CTHS. She is our newest OT student.

“I have had an interest in working in healthcare since high school, but I was never exactly sure what I wanted this to look like. During my undergrad I had the opportunity to volunteer at a supervised gym for seniors and individuals with a variety of health/physical conditions. While volunteering there I realized that I really enjoyed working with people to reach their fitness goals – particularly when they had functional meaning to them, such as fulfilling roles as a parent. I started exploring different careers that may help me pursue this passion and came across OT - thanks to some guidance from friends I had that were already in the program, I realized this was definitely the path I wanted to take. I value the holistic and functional approach that OTs take, as well as the collaboration with clients for goals that are important to them.”-Tara Roughley
