Come share about the incredible work you do with your students and we'll thank you with a $20 Starbucks gift card!

One of our team values is never stop growing. One thing our team talks about after completing professional development is, but what exactly are teachers asking students to do? We want to best support school-age kids with their reading, writing and language skills so they can truly thrive in school and life. But in order to do that, WE NEED YOU.

We are looking to connect with small groups of teachers who teach the same grade for 1 hour over Zoom (8-9pm EST).

We love seeing International Dyslexia Association Ontario celebrating DLD day!

❓ Did you know?

Some people have difficulty understanding and using words and sentences. This difficulty with oral language may be Developmental Language Disorder (DLD). People with DLD might need extra time to understand ideas and explain their own ideas.

Speech-language pathologists (SLPs) support children with dyslexia and DLD. Teachers and caregivers can also help!

Find more resources, webinars and podcast episodes on our website about conditions that often co-occur with dyslexia, like DLD such as:

1 in 14 people have a lifelong brain difference that makes talking and listening difficult. It’s called Developmental Language Disorder, or DLD for short.

As someone working with kids & teens, you can look for these signs. If you see them:
• Share with the family about DLD
• Offer to connect the family with speech-language pathology services
• Collaborate with SLPs to best support your client

ven though we talk about DLD a lot here, not all children with language challenges have DLD!

When a child has a a biomedical condition in which a language disorder can occur as part of a complex pattern of impairments, speech-language pathologists should use label: language disorder associated with _______. This includes: autism, brain injuries, intellectual disability, cerebral palsy, and Down Syndrome.

If a child is given a DLD label and then diagnosed with one of these biomedical conditions, a speech-language pathologist will update their label accordingly.

1 in 14 people have DLD, a brain difference that leads to challenges with understanding and using language.

DLD presentations vary person to person, but you may notice:
➡ Difficulty learning new vocabulary
➡ Difficulty following instructions
➡ Grammar errors (e.g., Him eat the banana, She goed to the store)
➡ High use of non-specific words like (e.g., I put that thing over there)
➡ Difficulty recalling words to use
➡ Mixing up the order of words
➡ Difficulties ‘reading between the lines’
➡ Disorganized and hard to follow stories
➡ Difficulty identifying main information from a story or text
➡ Difficulty understanding what they read (reading comprehension challenges)

Even though it occurs in 1 in 14 people, most people have never heard of DLD. Share this post to help us raise awareness.
