Remember to slow down…

and listen

Mindfulness means tuning into the moment.

In our distraction- filled rushing world, it’s become a lost art form to slow down.

The stress this causes us isn’t serving our physical or mental health.

So today, I’d like to remind you, to slow down.

Deepen your breathing.

Happy Sunday everyone.

Lately, I find myself missing the warmth of the sun and the energy of the summer. This appetite for heat has landed me in the sauna. It's a newer self-care habit that I am finding refuge in. It’s my chance to slow down, relax into my breath and let go of what isn't serving me.
Sweat is a vehicle for cleansing and acts as a major elimination route for the body. Researchers at the University of Alberta have determined that heavy metal toxins like cadmium, nickel, lead and aluminum can sweat out in amounts up to 10 times greater than in urine. Hormone-disrupting chemicals, like BPA, can also be liberated and passed out through sweat.
The heat stress induced by the sauna challenges the heart and strengthens the circulatory system, just like exercise, but without doing any physical activity. Studies have found that frequent sauna use can lower your risk of dying from a heart attack by 60%, having a stroke by 51% and developing high blood pressure by 46%. Regular sauna use may even help you live longer. Studies have found that using the sauna, 2-3 times per week lowers the risk of dying from any cause by 24% and developing Alzheimer's by 20%.
These are just some of the reasons to regularly sweat it out in a sauna. It’s important to stay hydrated during your session and shower afterwards to bind up and clear away any toxins that have been released.
Many thanks to for creating this beautiful space and sharing the magic of the sauna with me!

Lavender is nature's anti-anxiety plant medicine. Even just a whiff of it can make us feel calmer.
The linalool and linalyl acetate found in lavender travel up the olfactory nerve and increase GABA signalling within the brain. GABA has calming effects on the brain, mind and nervous system, reducing agitation, restlessness, excessive thinking and irritability.
Another beautiful thing about this plant medicine is that it is non-habit forming and usually well-tolerated with few side effects.
Studies have found that lavender improves the quality and length of sleep, almost as well as a low dose of lorazepam (Ativan).
There are many ways to bring more lavender into your life. Here are some of my favourites:
-Add it to a diffuser
-Spray it onto your pillow
-Add a few dabs into your tub or shower
-Dilute 2-3 drops into a carrier oil and massage it into your palms or over your temples
-Have a cup of lavender tea

Feeling depressed? Then get yourself some dark chocolate! A recent study found that people who ate dark chocolate were 70% less likely to report symptoms of depression the next day, compared to people who ate no chocolate at all. The study found that the type of chocolate matters, as there was no reduction in depression risk in people eating milk chocolate, only dark.
Chocolate is the only food known to contain anandamide, a type of endocannabinoid that the body produces naturally during states of bliss and pleasure. This could be why some people say it's better than s*x 🤷.
It also has compounds known to improve circulation to the brain, improve focus, boost energy and reduce inflammation.
So let go of the guilt and reach for some dark chocolate. Just make sure you eat chocolate that is 70% or darker and keep it limited to 2 ounces per day (60 grams or 1/3 cup).
