Writing

Some transitions arrive quietly. No warning, no map, just a feeling that something is shifting. I’m in the middle of one right now: moving to Alberta and stepping into a new chapter of life. There’s excitement, grief, uncertainty, and a whole lot of “what now?” in the in between. The mystery of transition is that you can’t always see where the path is leading. You can only learn to trust yourself as you walk it. ✨

Five mental health tools that have helped me navigate the unknown:

1. Journaling to give my thoughts somewhere to land instead of carrying them all in my head.

2. Grounding to come back to my senses and remind myself that I am safe in this moment.

3. Movement through walking, stretching, and getting outside to help process emotions through my body.

4. Connection by talking honestly with people I trust and allowing myself to receive support.

5. Self compassion to remind myself that I don’t need to have everything figured out while I’m becoming.

Maybe the mystery of transition isn’t about knowing exactly what comes next. Maybe it’s about learning to be present with the unknown and trusting that I’ll meet the next version of my life when I get there.

Religious trauma is real. ✨

Sometimes it looks like guilt, shame, fear of making the “wrong” choice, or feeling like you’re never quite good enough.

Therapy can help you untangle what you were taught from what you actually believe. It gives you space to question, set boundaries, heal, and build a relationship with yourself that isn’t rooted in fear.

Healing doesn’t have to mean rejecting everything. Sometimes it’s simply choosing what still feels true and letting go of what doesn’t.

Things “Simon Says” taught me that therapy had to undo…

I learned that being good meant being obedient.
I learned to silence my questions and ignore my own feelings.
I learned to carry guilt and shame before I even understood why.

Healing has meant unlearning fear, finding my voice, and learning that compassion is not something I have to earn.

For anyone who relates, you are not alone. ❤️‍🩹

I recently stepped away from the helping profession for a while.

Not because I cared any less, but because I recognized that I needed to create space to rest, reflect, and reconnect with my own needs.

As helpers, supporters, and caregivers, we give so much of ourselves to supporting others that it can become easy to overlook our own well-being. We encourage our clients to embrace boundaries, practice self-compassion, and honour their limits, yet we often find it challenging to offer ourselves that same kindness.

Rest has reminded me that my value is not defined by what I accomplish. It has shown me that boundaries create space for deeper presence and that I can care deeply without carrying every story, every struggle, and every burden that is shared with me.

Taking time away has allowed me to return with greater clarity, compassion, and capacity.

To the counsellors and helping professionals who are feeling stretched thin, remember that rest does not mean you care any less. Sometimes rest is what allows us to continue showing up with the presence, compassion, and care that this work requires.

What has rest been teaching you lately? ✨

Sometimes the biggest journey isn’t across the world. It’s the one back to yourself.

My favourite place to travel is to my people. No matter where life takes me, being with them reminds me of who I am and where I belong.

Travel doesn’t just show us new places. It reveals how we cope with uncertainty, what brings us joy, where we seek comfort, and who we become when the familiar falls away.

Whether I’m exploring somewhere new or returning to the people who feel like home, every journey is an invitation to understand myself a little more. 🌍✨

Religious trauma is not only about what happened to you. It is also about what you had to give up to survive.

Many people leave high control religious environments feeling disconnected from themselves. Some describe this as a kind of psychic amputation, a powerful metaphor for losing touch with parts of their identity, emotions, and inner knowing in order to belong or stay safe.

Healing is not about having all the answers. It is about making room for curiosity, self trust, grief, and authenticity.

People often ask me, “Why are you doing a PhD?”
The answer is simple: because research has the power to improve people’s lives.

I’m researching religious trauma because many individuals have experienced harmful religious environments that continue to affect their mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual well-being. Yet these experiences are often misunderstood or overlooked in healthcare.

My hope is that this research will help nurses, psychotherapists, and other healthcare professionals better recognize religious trauma and provide care that is informed, compassionate, and evidence based.

If my work helps even one clinician better understand a patient or one person feel seen and supported, it will have been worth it.

Research doesn’t just add to what we know.

It has the power to change how we care.

❤️ Follow along as I share my journey through PhD life, nursing research, psychotherapy, and religious trauma.
