🤔 “Aren’t routines too restrictive?”

It’s one of the most common questions we hear!

The truth is, routines aren’t about being rigid - they’re about creating predictability. Research shows that when children know what to expect, they tend to feel more safe, secure, and confident.

A calming bedtime routine is especially important because it helps signal to your child’s brain and body that it’s time to wind down for sleep. Over time, these consistent cues can make the transition to sleep smoother.

Here are a few of our favourite tips:
1. Use the rooms of your home for their intended purpose, and avoid going back to a previous room once you’ve moved on to the next step.
2. Keep the routine calm, predictable, and consistent.
3. Make naptime routines “mini” versions of your bedtime routine using the same familiar sleep cues.

Remember, the goal isn’t perfection… it’s consistency. Life happens! Even with some flexibility, a predictable routine can help set your child up for better sleep.

One of our favourite ways to prepare for a toddler bed transition is by talking through sleep rules together, just like Jamie and Rafa are doing here. đź’™

Children thrive with structure and predictability. Clear expectations help them understand what is expected while also giving them opportunities to build independence and confidence.

Read the rules together, talk about what each one means, and encourage your child to participate in the discussion. They can even colour or decorate the page to make it their own.

A child who can understand and engage in a conversation about sleep rules is often showing one of the signs that they may be ready for a toddler bed. The goal is to provide enough structure to help your child succeed while giving them room to develop autonomy along the way.

Looking for a security object for your child?

Transitional objects, like loveys or soft blankets, can support early self-soothing. They provide consistent sensory comfort, which can help children feel secure at bedtime and support emerging independent sleep skills.

The muslin security blankets and loveys are soft and breathable, making them a gentle option for bedtime and naps.

Which one is your favourite? Let us know in the comments! ⬇️

*Disclaimer: We are not affiliated with and this post is not sponsored. These are simply our personal favourites. As always, supervise your child when using loveys or blankets, and avoid leaving loose items in sleep spaces for infants under 12 months. For individualized guidance, please consult your pediatrician.

Nightmares are really common in childhood and usually reflect a developing imagination.

After waking from one, children might feel scared, want comfort, or not want to be alone. For younger children especially, dreams can feel very real in the moment.

📲If nightmares are frequent, intense, or starting to affect sleep, our team can help support you with strategies tailored to your child and family.
