Someone once told me…
“When the heart is bitter, don’t trust the tongue”
And that has stayed with me for so long.
When you are so taken over by strong feelings, what you say is massively impacted and might not be fully representative of what you mean or who you really are.
Here’s what happens: you get triggered, the emotion comes in a big wave, all logic turns off, and out comes fire in the form of sharp words and mean jabs.
Then BAM, you’re hit with shame, guilt and regret. Not fun.
I have said some awwwwwful things when those challenging emotions roll in 😬. Ugh, and then that regret that comes after is all consuming.
My relationship is what suffered the most. But also my perception of self. I did not like who I was when I got triggered and became this snappy mean woman, who said things that hurt.
There came a point when I couldnt keep letting it happen. I didn’t mean it, and I always regretted it. And I was so over this loop I found myself in. Plus the conflicts became more and more.
It had to stop.
And it did. We’ve been together 17 years and counting!
Understanding my own emotions, how to release the emotional load I was carrying, how to use feelings to alter my beliefs and perceptions…was the way.
This exercise has completely changed my response to the anger, fear, insecurity etc, I was triggered into. It slowed me down, and helped me realign so I could talk from a place of feeling grounded..
I’m very noticeably less snappy and fired up easily, which is great for everyone…especially my husband.
If you try this exercise, let me know how it works for you. Like actually tell me because I’m so curious how different humans respond to these kinds of things. 💖
