Have you had the conversation??
I'm talking about the conversation we often put off because we think we have more time, we're not ready, or quite honestly, we'd rather not think about it just yet - those are all fair reasons to put this off.
As the Director of Pre-Need at Barnes Memorial Funeral Home, I have these conversations with people every day, and something I've noticed over the years is that our conversations are rarely only about funeral services.
In fact, the funeral itself is often only one part of a much bigger conversation.
We talk about the importance of having an up-to-date will, and who you've chosen as your executor. Whether your beneficiary designations reflect your wishes and are current.
We might chat about living wills, organ donation, powers of attorney, and who has the authority to make decisions on your behalf if you cannot make them yourself.
We talk about the bank accounts, the investment contacts, life insurance policies, and something as seemingly simple as making sure the right people know where to find important documents, passwords and login information when they need them.
Some of the most important questions are: What happens when someone passes away? Who needs to be contacted? Who takes care of what? Who is responsible for making the final funeral arrangements? Will the people you love the most know what your final wishes are?
These are important questions, and they deserve a place at the table long before a family finds itself navigating loss.
And then, of course, we talk about your funeral.
Burial or cremation? How do you decide what's right for you?
If you choose cremation, can you still have a traditional funeral service? What is the difference between a memorial service and a celebration of life? What options are available if you want something simple, something traditional, or something that reflects your personality and the life you've lived?
What happens if you're travelling, wintering somewhere warm, or simply away from home when the unexpected happens?
There are so many questions, and often, people don't even know which questions they should be asking until we sit down and start talking.
That's why I believe these conversations matter so much.
Preplanning isn't about expecting something bad to happen tomorrow. It's about giving yourself the opportunity to make informed decisions, understand your options, and communicate your wishes while you can.
It's also about the people you love ~ because when the time comes, they may already be carrying enough and having some guidance about your wishes will help ease the uncertainty of making decisions during an incredibly difficult time.
You don't need to have every answer today. You don't need to have everything organized perfectly. And you certainly don't need to know where to begin.
Sometimes, you simply need someone to help you start the conversation.
That's where we come in.
I'd love to invite you to connect with me at Barnes Memorial Funeral Home.
You can call us to request your complimentary digital copy of the Barnes Planning Guide, a helpful place to begin organizing your thoughts and important information.
Or, if you'd prefer to sit down together, book a pre-need consultation with me. We'll take the time to talk through your questions, explore your options, and help you understand what you may want to put in place for yourself and your family. You'll receive a copy of our Planning Guide to help you continue the conversation at home.
This is an honest conversation, guidance, and a place to start.
Because as you already know, sometimes looking after the people you love sometimes means having the conversations that are hardest to begin.
So, let me ask you: have you had that conversation with your loved ones yet?
