This year marks 10 years since the first fentanyl-related loss in the territory in 2016. We gather to remember the 151 Yukoners who have been lost to the toxic drug crisis, honour their memories, support one another, and to stand together and call for action to end this devastating public health emergency.

Our hearts are with everyone who has been affected and everyone who is struggling. You are not alone. Please reach out if you need support 💜🎗️

Hi everyone,

We wanted to let you know about the presence of a new substance that is making it's way into the unregulated opioid supply in Canada and the Yukon.

One Yukon's wastewater monitoring program in Whitehorse has detected cychlorphine, a potent synthetic opioid that has been linked to severe opioid overdoses. High doses can cause slowed or no breathing, nausea, vomiting, and sweating. According to BC health officials, Cychlorphine is 10 times more potent than fentanyl and its effect can last up to 48 hours. It is particularly dangerous when combined with other sedatives, which is commonly seen in opioid samples.

Because of its potency and how new it is, cychlorphine may be difficult to detect through our drug checking program as no immunoassay test strips are available to detect it and it’s often present in amounts not detectable by FTIR spectroscopy.

Our Supervised Consumption Site has also responded to a number of severe overdoses that occured more rapidly than we typically see. Thankfully, our team responded quickly and everyone is okay. We have also received reports of a number of serious overdoses in the community. We are encouraging everyone to use harm reduction strategies, carry naloxone and know how to use it. Call 911 and administer naloxone if anyone is in medical distress related to substance use, even if the symptoms don’t match a typical overdose presentation.

Thank you,

Blood Ties Team
