Computers- digital problems!
It’s been a long while since my last post. Life does get in the way of fun sometimes! After my last post between life but also a laptop dying and trying to transfer to a new one. I discovered a problem with my genealogy program after the transfer!
It was either my error (probably) or a problem with transferring but over 3000+ linked scans didn’t make the connection to their individuals in the program on the new computer. Of course, I didn’t check my file closely enough on the new computer after the transfer. So, a couple months of adding in new family information, I discovered 3000+ scans where now missing. So, I thought all I had to do was hit the re-link. Well, that didn’t work. Apparently, all reference to the scan being linked to an individual was gone entirely! I could not use my back up as I had added new information and records to this copy of my family program. Since going digital I don’t have hard copies of where and what I found anywhere else. So, it was looking like a manual re-entry of all the scans.
Well to say the least I was heartbroken and thought that’s it! I’m not starting over. So, I put genealogy aside. Well, no matter how long it collects dust, that research bug that gets under your skin will resurface. I am now at almost 1900 records reattached. It will probably take another a couple of months to complete re-adding the scans. Digital is wonderful but sometimes paper is better. My binders never lose the records in them! It got me thinking I need to make a written log or an additional program separate from Legacy with the where and what I found and added briefly outlined. Of course, I hope this never happens again but computer and software upgrades, so it is a very real possibility. So, more paperwork! Well, that’s ancestor hunting for you!
