With 59 babies born, August 2026 marked a record month for births at Whitehorse General Hospital.

“That’s a whole kindergarten class,” said one nurse on the Wild Rose Maternity unit about the news.

To put the record in perspective, WGH typically sees around 30 – 35 births each August. That beats the previous monthly record of 48 births in June 2021. Needless to say, the Wild Rose Maternity team has been busy! Thank you so much for your hard work, welcoming new babies to the world and congrats to all the parents!

Check out this new rug in the Nä Kų Healing Room at Whitehorse General Hospital! It depicts a drum painted by Justien Senoa Wood, an artist from the First Nation of Na-Cho Nyak Dun.

After Justien painted the drum, it was photographed and turned into this beautiful 10ft wide rug. Justien calls the piece, “Yukon Spring ~ Crocuses and Spruce Tips”

Meet Sofia-jan Asp! She is half Tahltan and half Ojibway. Her Ojibway name is ᐊᓂᒻᑮ or animkī, which means thunder. Sofia recently graduated high school and finished an internship with First Nations Health Programs (FNHP) at Whitehorse General Hospital.

Through her internship, Sofia gained the confidence and communication skills to do things like answer phone calls and help patients. With this being her first job, she also learned what it’s like to be in the workforce.

“Now, I have a lot of compassion for people in their jobs,” says Sofia. “It gave me a whole new perspective on what a workplace is like. When teachers explain it, it sounds kind of intimidating. I never thought I could actually do something like this.”

In her spare time, Sofia likes to spend time with her cat, family, and riding her motorcycle. With her internship complete, Sofia is looking to the future. She hopes to find a career as a medivac pilot, cop, firefighter, or military person. We sat down with Sofia to learn what it’s like to be an intern with FNHP. Congrats to our volunteer Vicky, Huiying Lin Zheng, who recently received a Yukon Outstanding Youth Achievement Award!

Vicky is a friendly visitor volunteer at Watson Lake Community Hospital, where she provides companionship and emotional support to patients while mentoring other volunteers. She demonstrates exceptional leadership, service and dedication to her community.

Her dedication and support doesn’t stop at Yukon Hospitals. Throughout the school year at Johnson Elementary School, she supported teachers, led reading groups, assisted students and helped with school administration. Vicky also served as student council president, yearbook editor-in-chief, girls’ volleyball captain and is a three-time Watson Lake Secondary School Athlete of the Year. She represented Team Yukon at the 2025 Canada Summer Games and received the 2026 Loran Provincial/Territorial Award for leadership and community involvement.

Outside of school, she organizes fundraisers, works as a math tutor, is a tourism ambassador and helps at her family’s restaurant. Through her vibrant personality, she consistently demonstrates compassion, responsibility and commitment to her rural Yukon community.

Now, Vicky is off to university. Thank you for everything you’ve done! We wish you the best in your next chapter!

Meet Anne Mease! A Citizen of Selkirk First Nation, Anne is a Senior Policy and Research Analyst with Yukon Hospitals First Nations Health Programs.

Anne focuses on how policies and programs are experienced in real life and helps shape them to better reflect the needs of First Nations patients. She looks at things like bringing traditional medicine and language into hospital policies and weaving together Indigenous and western approaches to care.

“I know in the end it’s going to benefit First Nation people,” says Anne about her work. “When people feel supported accessing care, it benefits their mental, physical, and spiritual wellness.”

To her role, Anne brings than 20 years of experience across environmental policy, language revitalization, and post‑secondary education. Before that, she got her start at Yukon Hospitals more than 40 years ago, as a certified nursing assistant at Whitehorse General Hospital. Now, she’s back, helping shape patient care once again.

Upgrades at Whitehorse General Hospital!

Check out our de-ionization system, helping to ensure surgical instruments are cleaned and sterilized by helping to remove dissolved ions.

So, what does “de-ionization” mean? Water naturally contains tiny mineral particles (ions) like calcium and magnesium. This new system removes those minerals, improving the water quality to support safe and effective sterilization.

Another step forward in supporting high-quality patient care at WGH!

Next time you come to Whitehorse General Hospital (WGH), you’ll have some new help to find your way. Updated wayfinding maps have been put up throughout the hospital. Look closer, and you’ll see more than just a map. Each map features the new names of our inpatient units. Each unit is named after a Yukon plant. The plants were chosen for their cultural significance, traditional use, and healing symbolism.

Each plant is represented by beadwork created by Tlingit artist Mary Blahitka. You’ll see those pieces of beadwork on the map, as well as on the walls of their unit, letting you know you’re in the right place.

A new welcome wall has also been installed in the front entrance of WGH. Featuring the new map, a multi-lingual greeting, land acknowledgement, and information about the new inpatient unit names, the wall helps to brighten the environment.

A paper version of the new map is available at the volunteer services information desk. A digital version is available through a QR code on the welcome wall.

More work is being done to enhance wayfinding tools at Yukon Hospitals. We look forward to sharing more updates as work progresses.

Congratulations to Cathy who is the runner up for the City of Whitehorse’s volunteer of the year award! Cathy volunteers at Whitehorse General Hospital where she leads the Morning Brew Crew - sponsored by Bean North Coffee Roasting Co. Ltd. – bringing coffee, comfort and connection to patients.

Cathy remembers patient’s stories, their preferred drinks, and the small details that help them feel seen. She also mentors new volunteers, fostering confidence, teamwork, and a culture of compassionate care.

Beyond her morning rounds, Cathy tends to the hospital’s indoor plants and outdoor patient garden, revitalizing spaces that offer calm and connection to the land. She supports community events such as Lights of Life, the Teddy Bear Clinic, and the Women’s Auxiliary High Tea, and even crochets toques and gloves for hospital programs.

Cathy’s warmth, and quiet leadership have transformed simple acts of service into meaningful contributions that strengthen patient care and enrich the hospital environment.

Meet Dr. Adam Pankalla! Adam works as a hospitalist physician at Whitehorse General Hospital. As a child, he was fascinated by how the human body works. Now he is driven to deliver high quality patient care.

“I’ve been working as a hospitalist on and off for 10 years now and I’m learning new things every day,” says Adam. “Providing high-quality care in our small urban setting is both very stimulating and humbling. I feel very privileged to work with people in times of need and this can make for very meaningful and rewarding relationships with patients.”

When he is not working, Adam can be found spending time with his kids and staying active by mountain biking, cross country skiing, and playing soccer.
