Schlegel Villages broke ground on The Village of Heritage Trails in Oakville. But the real story isn't the building going up. It's the community moving in with it.

When construction is complete, the residents, families and team members of Erin Mills Lodge will relocate to Heritage Trails, bringing decades of relationships and shared history with them. The new Village will have a Main Street, close-knit neighbourhoods, and every amenity Schlegel Villages is known for. What it can't get from a blueprint, Erin Mills Lodge will provide.

At Erin Mills Lodge, team members are setting alarms so they don't miss their daily learning challenge. That's not something you hear every day.

The Village has been trialing Axonify, a gamified learning platform that turns important training, like Infection Prevention and Control, into a bit of friendly competition. Daily questions, a leaderboard, and bragging rights between neighbourhoods have turned "have to" into "want to."

"Anytime you can put competition in, it's going to get people going," says neighbourhood coordinator Pooja Thiyya.

The results go beyond fun. Early reports helped the team spot knowledge gaps and target education where it was needed most, with steady improvement ever since.

Tawfeeq Al Hadary spent years as an emergency room nurse in Lebanon, handling critical care and coordinating community programs for older adults. Today, as he and his wife await the birth of their first child in Canada, he's starting a new chapter as a Personal Support Worker at The Village of Millers Creek .

He calls it starting "from below zero." But Tawfeeq isn't discouraged. He's building, one careful step at a time, toward his goal of becoming a licensed nurse in Ontario, supported by a team that welcomed him from day one.
