Ultrasound probes are among the most expensive components to replace — and some of the easiest to damage. Fortunately, a lot of probe damage comes down to handling and can be avoided.
Here are a few habits that can help extend probe life:
• Store probes in their holders between exams rather than resting them on the bed or system.
• Keep cables off the floor and away from cart wheels.
• Use only manufacturer-approved cleaning and disinfecting products.
• Avoid wrapping cables tightly around the probe or system.
• Inspect the lens, cable and strain relief regularly for signs of wear.
• Make probe handling part of new staff training.
Probe problems can develop gradually and may first appear as changes in image quality rather than an obvious failure.
If one of your probes is giving you trouble, we also provide ultrasound probe assessment and repair support.
