June 6 is National Health & Fitness Day!

National Health and Fitness Day is an annual coast-to-coast celebration of wellness held on the first Saturday of June. Originally conceived after the 2010 Vancouver Olympics to promote grassroots fitness, this event was formally established countrywide in 2014 through the unanimous passage of the National Health and Fitness Day Act.

Since then, this special occasion has rapidly grown into a nationwide movement motivating Canadians to discover the mental and physical health benefits of physical activity. Through organized community gatherings as well as individual participation, National Health and Fitness Day encourages citizens of all ages and abilities to kickstart healthier lifestyles.

Physical activity is known to significantly impact mental health by reducing symptoms of depression and anxiety and improving mood and cognitive function, underscoring the importance of an active lifestyle for overall health. However, in the digital age, new challenges such as the rise of online gambling have emerged, posing serious risks to mental well-being. The convenience and accessibility of online gambling can lead to addictive behaviors, financial stress, and emotional distress, highlighting the need for a balanced approach to digital activities to ensure online entertainment does not compromise mental health.

June 3 is Clean Air Day!
We all have heard about air pollution outside, but did you know you can improve the air in your home? Here are a few tips along with an informative podcast about air quality and your health.

*Leave interior doors open
*Use bathroom and kitchen fans
*Keep baseboards or heating vents clear of furniture
*Open windows and doors when outside conditions permit
during periods of high levels of outdoor air pollution, reduce air entering the home from outside by closing the window and turning on the air conditioning
*Keep beds, bedding and furniture away from outside walls to allow enough air and heat flow around furnishings
*Use a mechanical HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) system in your home with a filtration system built into the duct work
*Replace or clean the filter as per the manufacturer's instructions

We explore how air quality can affect our health and what we can do about it.

National Organ and Tissue Awareness Week – April 18 to 24
Did you know:
A single deceased organ donor can save up to eight lives and improve the lives of over 75 more through tissue donation. Organs like hearts, lungs, livers, kidneys, pancreas, and intestines provide life-saving transplants, while tissues such as corneas, skin, bone, and heart valves enhance quality of life.
Key Impacts of Donation:
Organ Donation: Saves up to 8 lives.
Tissue Donation: Improves or restores the lives of up to 75 people.
Heart & Lung: Transplanted to save patients with end-stage failure.
Kidneys & Liver: Can be transplanted to save lives or, in the case of kidneys, remove the need for dialysis.
Corneas: Restore sight to those with corneal blindness.
Skin & Bone: Help burn victims and assist in reconstructive, orthopedic surgeries.
Key Facts:
High Demand: Thousands are on waiting lists for transplants, and many die while waiting.
Age is Not a Barrier: There is no strict age limit; Canada's oldest donor was over 90.
Eligibility: While only 1–2% of deaths allow for organ donation, many more can donate tissue.
Registration: Even if you have signed a donor card, it is crucial to discuss your decision with family.
To make a difference, you can register as an organ donor on your provincial or state registry, such as Blood.ca in Canada
