Meet VANNI, Italian eyewear with a story that starts with cars.

In 1929, Giovanni Vitaloni started a family business in Turin making parts for Italy’s brand-new car industry. Decades later, his son Alberto took what the family had learned designing car mirrors and turned it toward eyewear. In 1987 he launched a new brand and named it after his dad, whose friends all called him “Vanni.”

Almost 40 years later, VANNI is still family-run and still headquartered in Turin. Every frame is made in Italy, from the cotton-based acetate to steel so thin it’s cut with lasers. The style is chic and timeless with a little twist, and they’ve won some of eyewear’s top design awards along the way.

Summer’s over, but don’t put your sunglasses in the drawer yet.

In the fall, the sun sits lower in the sky. That means it’s hitting you right at eye level, and anyone who’s driven on Portage around 5 p.m. knows exactly what we’re talking about.

A few reasons to keep them handy this season:
Glare is worse. That low sun bounces off wet roads, windshields, and car hoods, and it can make it really hard to see on your commute.

Clouds don’t block UV. Even on a grey October day, most of the sun’s UV rays still get through.

UV adds up. Exposure builds over a lifetime and is linked to cataracts and other eye conditions down the road.

Today is World Sight Day, and this year's theme is all about one simple thing: .

Here's the part a lot of people don't realize. Some of the most common eye conditions, like glaucoma, often have no early symptoms. Your vision can feel totally fine while something is quietly changing. A comprehensive eye exam is how we catch it early, when there are the most options for treating it.

How often should you go?
Adults: every two years
Kids and seniors: every year
And a Manitoba bonus: Manitoba Health covers routine eye exams for kids 18 and under and seniors 65+ (every two calendar years).

Meet L.A. Eyeworks, the brand for anyone who thinks glasses should be the best part of the outfit.

It started on September 9, 1979, when two opticians from Huntington Beach, G*i Gherardi and Barbara McReynolds, opened a little shop on Melrose Avenue in Los Angeles. Their whole idea was to push back on boring eyewear and treat frames as a way to show off your face, not hide it.

That attitude shows up in everything they make: bold shapes, unexpected colours, and frames that start as hand-drawn sketches before they’re finished by hand. Their famous portrait ads, shot by photographer Greg Gorman since the early ‘80s, have featured everyone from David Hockney to Iggy Pop, all under one line: “A face is like a work of art. It deserves a great frame.”
Over 45 years later, they’re still independently owned and still doing things their own way. And we’ve got them in-store.
