After a year off, we were happy to be back at the Cooks Creek Heritage Day this past Sunday. It was a sweltering but enjoyable day with good food and friends! Our volunteers (Chris, John, Lisa, and Denise) were more than happy to discuss genealogy those stopping by the table.

Here is another gem from small town newspapers! This one was published in The Rossburn Review [Rossburn, Manitoba] on 30 Apr 1981. Lucky you if you have Yaskiw family from the area. :) As the second image reminds us ... trust but verify! Errors were identified and a correction issued the following week.

Here's a map that may interest some of you. :)

🗺️ Slavic Languages in Austria-Hungary (1914)

✍️ This map illustrates the distribution of the major Slavic languages within the Austro-Hungarian Empire on the eve of World War I, including approximate population figures for each group.

Language groups shown:
East Slavic
• Ukrainian (2,700,000)
• Rusyn (1,350,000)
West Slavic
• Czech (6,520,000)
• Slovak (1,990,000)
• Polish (5,030,000)
South Slavic
• Slovene (1,270,000)
• Serbo-Croatian (5,690,000)

📯 Significance for Carpatho-Rusyns:
The map clearly distinguishes Rusyn as a separate East Slavic language spoken by approximately 1.35 million people. The Rusyn-speaking territory corresponds to the traditional Carpatho-Rusyn homeland in the Carpathian Mountains — primarily Subcarpathian Ruthenia, the Prešov Region, and the Lemko Region.

The things you can find in the newspaper! The 1985 Shoal Lake Tourist Guide was digitized on newspaperarchive.com with the 19 Jun 1985 edition of The Shoal Lake Star. The map shown below is from the guide and identifies land owners in the R.M. Note that this is Shoal Lake, Manitoba. Can you find your family (presuming Facebook didn't compress too much)?
