Although a little side hustle of mine - First Aid & CPR is still a huge part of an Athletic Therapist’s work.

I have a passion for teaching. I taught AT labs at the university while still a student and after as well. I also love to teach all things AT. So, naturally, becoming a First Aid Instructor wasn’t a hard bargain because it incorporates all of the things I love most about Athletic Therapy!

Today I completed the first of our two-day Standard/Intermediate First Aid & CPR-C training for a private company here in Winnipeg.

Lots of talking, but also lots of skills were practiced as well, and I love being able to help those participating - whether they’ve already taken a course before or are completely new to the class.

Everybody benefits from First Aid & CPR training, whether you will ever use it or not - you just never know.

Thanks for watching!

Probably the most fun part about Athletic Therapy (for me) is learning a variety of taping/bracing techniques. 🤩

From theoretical and hands-on courses, labs, practicum placements and practical exams, we are no strangers to using a tape job as one way of protecting and restricting range of motion to safely return to your activity. ☺️

The best part? We can be totally creative! Now, there are still guidelines for each tape job and they need to be purposeful, safe and effective. Nevertheless, our critical-thinking skills will help us help you feel your best when you need to most. 😤

Have you ever been taped by an Athletic Therapist?

What’s not to love about Athletic Therapy? 🤩

To clarify, I do believe in the power of manual therapy, such as massage as part of your rehabilitation and/or treatment.

What irks me is that we seem to forget what the real purpose of a massage is. It’s therapeutic, meant for relaxation, releasing muscle tension, etc.

Yes, your calves, for example, might feel tight on the day of the game. This makes sense especially when some of my teams play more than one game on the weekend. It’s important to remember, however, that coming to me an hour before your game for immediate results for your muscle tightness and pain will likely not go the way you want it to go.

What may help your muscle tightness/soreness/weakness for game days?
- Having a proper dynamic warmup before your training sessions
- Making sure you’re getting in a cooldown after your training session/games
- Strength training
- Proper hydration (regularly)
- Getting your proper amount of sleep
- Being proactive as an athlete and discussing your MSK issues before it gets to the point of no-return during the season 👀

Obviously I want the best for my patients and athletes so I will always do whatever it takes to get you ready for an event. Just know that it takes more than just my teeny weeny hands to make your pain go away right before the game 🫣.

What are some of my favourite tasks as an Athletic Therapist?

In the words of my pro athletes, the Gatorade I made was « cr*ck* », so I take a lot of pride when I say I was good at making the mixture 😤

When creating a rehab program for my patients, I love to research about the specific injury - especially if I’ve never worked with one before. I then get see what other healthcare professionals like to do for treatment and in conclusion, this allows me to make a sound plan on my specifically-tailored program for my patient!

I have to ask… what is the best Gatorade flavour?

Scariest injury I’ve had to deal with? 🫪🫣

Luckily that player was okay. It was a clean dislocation, so there were no blood vessels or nerves that were affected by the joint separation.

There has been other scary moments, but this would be in my top list just because physically seeing a dislocated ankle was wild enough for me LOL.

Thanks to my surprise guest on today’s video!

I think a lot of people expect the first thing to come out of our mouths when answering this question is « I love sports ».

While that is very true for me, I didn’t choose this career for just that. It was much more than getting to work in a field setting.

As an athlete I also suffered injuries. As a young person never having been exposed to an Athletic Therapist for rehab, I kind of did what I thought was good enough and moved on through pain and discomfort because not playing was never an option.

Looking on the other side of it now, I realize how much I was able to learn through Athletic Therapy and how it allows us to keep doing the activities we love, all while getting stronger and smarter about it.

So yes - the sports are fun to be around. But that wasn’t the end goal for me. It was finding something that would allow me to help someone understand the importance of exercise and movement as medicine as well as learning why the body becomes injured and how can I go about it safe and effectively.

Keep the questions coming!

First question (and also the most frequently asked question): What is the difference between a Physiotherapist and an Athletic Therapist?

Let’s get this straight: the clinical assessment, clinical diagnosis and the rehab following assessment is the same between both professions. We can both equally do these things regarding your pain/injury.

Physiotherapists: A broader background knowledge on the cardiovascular system, conditions relating to it, as well as the neurological system and its conditions affecting someone. This will allow them to be better equipped when rehabilitating those suffering from those conditions relating to that. They also do not have field training for emergency medical responses.

Athletic Therapists: Our primary focus is on the musculoskeletal system (bones, muscles, joints, tendons, ligaments). We also have an adequate knowledge on the nervous system (concussions, nerves, etc.). The big difference: we have extensive training within our degree for on-field or sideline emergency responding. This makes us the most qualified healthcare professionals on the sidelines of an athletic event because our Sport First Responder certification allows us to handle any emergency situation during an event, should one arise.

Hope this helps. Keep the questions coming, this was fun to do!

Happy National Athletic Therapy Month!

Lots of new followers since I’ve created this account - allow me to reintroduce myself!

Although I work mostly within the field department, my passion for helping people get back to themselves shows in the clinical setting as well. A big misconception about Athletic Therapy is that we only treat the athletic population - but that could not be further from the truth. Athletic Therapy is for everyone!

I’m hoping to showcase a little more about Athletic Therapy this month in hopes to educate, highlight and invite you to try Athletic Therapy yourself.

Stay tuned 👀

Never been so proud 🥹

Took me some time, but it was so worth it 🤩

Secured the goods 🔥

This one was looooong overdue, but we finally have it!

Providing heat as a therapeutic modality in a session can be a great addition to your treatment plan. It’s not the « be all end all », obviously, but it definitely complements the manual therapy very well when used properly.

So many little changes for the clinic, but what a huge difference it will make for my patients and athletes! Can’t wait for you to try it!
