Intensive structured literacy = Orton Gillingham

Ontario’s teacher unions have served notice to the Minister of Education pertaining to their contract renegotiations. Smaller class sizes appear to be a union request.

Small congregated LD classes with 8 students led by a special education teacher supported by an EA tend not to produce the intended outcomes at many Ontario school boards, those outcomes being reading, writing, and math learning acceleration.

This lack of realizing intended benefits from small specialized classrooms is not due to the classroom size but is more likely due to the education system’s lack of mandatory:

➡️ teacher education/PD pertaining to dyslexia,
➡️ evidence-based reading/math instruction training, and
➡️ knowledge pertaining to how to deliver targeted, intensive, diagnostic, and individualized reading/math intervention.
