Heading out in the heat? 🌡️☀️

Be prepared by packing extra prosthetic socks, a towel, and a spare liner to help manage sweat and stay comfortable. If perspiration is causing skin irritation, talk to your prosthetist or healthcare provider about antiperspirants, including prescription options designed for excessive sweating.

A little gentle reminder to take care on these hot summer days!

🚨☀️ Recognizing Heat Illness ☀️🚨

Know the Warning Signs
Hot weather can affect anyone—including experienced prosthetic users. When temperatures rise, it's important to recognize the early signs of heat-related illness and take action quickly.

⚠️ Watch for symptoms such as:
* Dizziness
* Headache
* Nausea
* Excessive fatigue
* Confusion
* Fainting
These can be signs that your body is struggling to cope with the heat.
✅ If you notice these symptoms:
* Move to a cool or air-conditioned location.
* Drink water or other hydrating fluids.
* Rest and avoid further physical activity.
* Seek medical attention if symptoms worsen or do not improve.

💡 Simple message:If something feels "off" don't try to push through it. Listening to your body is one of the smartest things you can do.

👇 Discussion Question:Have you ever had to change your plans because of extreme heat? What strategies help you stay safe during hot weather?

Living with limb loss or limb difference is about much more than receiving a prosthesis.

Using an artificial limb is an ongoing process that involves regular adjustments, maintenance, and rehabilitation. As the body changes, so can the fit, comfort, and performance of the device, making follow-up care an essential part of long-term mobility.

The challenges aren't always visible - but they're very real.

Today, we take a moment to recognize the fathers, grandfathers, stepfathers, caregivers, and all those who quietly show up day after day with strength, patience and care.

Fatherhood doesn't just look one way. Sometimes, it's found in steady encouragement, in quiet sacrifices, in problem solving behind the scenes, and in the kind of presence that makes others feel safe enough to persevere.

At Winnipeg Prosthetics & Orthotics, we’re fortunate to meet so many men who carry that role in deeply personal ways - balancing resilience with responsibility, and often putting others first without hesitation.

It also reminds us that strength isn’t just physical. It’s adaptability. It’s persistence. It’s learning how to move forward through change, and helping others do the same.

To all the fathers and father figures in our community, thank you for the steady impact you make — often in ways you may never fully see.

Happy Father's Day to you all!

Let’s take a behind-the-scenes look at how an AFO is made 👣

Every orthosis we create is customized to fit our client’s unique needs, lifestyle, and mobility goals. In this case, Shayne is crafting a leather AFO for a client who has lost two toes.

As Shayne explains, “We’re filling the space with foam so there isn’t a lot of wiggle room in the shoe when they wear it.” By carefully shaping the AFO to account for the missing toes, the goal is to provide better stability, comfort, and confidence with every step.
