Meet Tracey, CancerCare Manitoba’s VP Clinical Operations and CNO, is one of our executive team members taking part in Challenge for Life this year.

Participating virtually while out of town, she’ll be completing her challenge on a hiking trail with the sounds of nature as her playlist. For her, every step is taken in memory of her mom, who she lost to glioblastoma 14 years ago.

“Participating in Challenge for Life is a meaningful way to honour her memory while supporting others affected by cancer.”

Whether walking in person or virtually, participants across Manitoba are helping fund cancer research and support programs that make a difference for Manitobans facing cancer.

It's always a good idea to be prepared.

Unexpected events such as wildfires, floods, severe storms, or power outages can happen. While emergencies are uncommon, taking a few simple steps now can help ensure you have the information and supplies you need if you ever need to leave home quickly.

For cancer patients, having important medical information, medications, and essential supplies readily available can help make a stressful situation easier to manage.

Swipe through for a checklist of items you may wish to keep close at hand—just in case.

💛 A little preparation today can provide peace of mind tomorrow.

CancerCare Manitoba Physician-Scientists Lead Practice-Changing Research

Two CancerCare Manitoba physician-scientists, Dr. Ryan Zarychanski and Dr. Brett Houston, helped lead a landmark Canadian study published in the New England Journal of Medicine.

The study found that a low-cost medication can reduce the need for blood transfusions during major surgery without increasing the risk of dangerous blood clots.

More than 8,300 patients participated, including over 5,000 people undergoing cancer surgery.

The findings could improve care for millions of patients worldwide and help conserve millions of units of blood every year.

A powerful example of Manitoba research making a global impact.

During Men's Health Week, we're highlighting small actions that can make a big difference.

Regular physical activity can help reduce the risk of several cancers and improve overall health and well-being.

Whether it's walking the dog, golfing nine holes, working in the yard, biking to work or even playing with your kids. It all adds up.

Movement matters. Consistency matters more.

For one of CancerCare Manitoba’s executive leaders, Dr. Donna Turner, Challenge for Life is deeply personal.

She witnesses the difference that research, programs, and support services make in people's lives. And every year, she laces up and walks — not just in support of that work, but as a part of it.

"The Challenge for Life checks all the boxes. It's about the patients, the staff, and being excellent at what we do together."

As a member of the Tomorrow Project Trekkers, Donna powers through the 5K her way, skipping the AirPods in favour of real conversations with the remarkable people around her. Because for Donna, that connection is the whole point.

This year, she and her team are walking for all Manitobans. “One in two Canadians will develop cancer in their lifetime. If we applied everything we know about cancer risk factors, we’d reduce the number of people diagnosed every year by 40 per cent and we are learning more every day.”

This , we’re sharing the story of Dr. Andrew Cuddihy, a Research Associate at the Paul Albrechtsen Research Institute CancerCare Manitoba.

Living with profound hearing loss since childhood, Andrew has spent decades navigating barriers in professional and everyday settings. Today, thanks to a pair of captioning glasses through the generosity of a donor, he can participate more fully in seminars, meetings, and conferences than ever before.

“For the first time, I can truly and fully participate in seminars and meetings without having to rely on lipreading or any other third-party help,” he says.

The impact reaches far beyond the workplace—opening doors to experiences like movies, plays, comedy shows and other events that many of us take for granted.

Andrew’s story is a powerful example of how accessibility can unlock potential, strengthen inclusion and create a greater sense of belonging.

is almost here and members of our executive team are stepping up to support CancerCare Manitoba Foundation largest annual fundraiser. 💙

For Dr. Kent Stobart, participating is about giving back, staying active and being part of something bigger.

“What inspires me most is the diversity of people who participate — all ages, all fitness levels. It’s really about showing up.”

Even while out of town, Dr. Stobart is taking part virtually alongside his dog, Maple, who keeps him moving (with plenty of stops to sniff the plants along the way 🌿).

He’s also walking in honour of loved ones affected by cancer, including his cousin and mother-in-law.

His advice for anyone thinking about joining?

“Just walk — just do it.”

Whether you walk, run, volunteer, donate or cheer others on, every step helps support cancer patients and families across Manitoba.
