When Dr. Alysa Almojuela, Neurosurgeon at HSC_Winnipeg, was deciding where to build her career, it was HSC’s commitment to innovation that stood out.

“I chose to work at HSC because of its commitment to innovation and patient care, and I know that much of the innovation we see is supported by the HSC Foundation and its donors,” says Dr. Almojuela.

Donor-funded tools are helping transform spine surgery—improving precision, confidence, and outcomes for patients.

“This outstanding equipment allows us to be more accurate and more confident in our decision-making. When there is a culture of innovation, we can do our best work for Manitobans.”

Your gift to the annual Innovation HSC campaign helps bring leading-edge technology to Manitoba—and helps attract exceptional health care professionals like Dr. Almojuela.

A Manitoba first is helping change life for Manitobans living with epilepsy.

Earlier this year, 51-year-old Tom Trottier became the first patient in Manitoba to undergo deep brain stimulation (DBS) surgery for epilepsy at . Before the procedure, Tom was experiencing up to 10 seizures a month. In the month following surgery, that number dropped to three.

But for Tom and his family, the impact goes beyond numbers. He’s back to swimming, creating art, volunteering, helping others, and returning to the routines that bring him joy.

“Tom is always happiest when he’s busy, when he’s helping, when he’s part of something,” says his mother, Pat.

This milestone procedure reflects the incredible innovation happening at HSC — and the life-changing impact donor support makes possible for Manitobans.

National Indigenous History Month is a time to honour the diverse cultures, experiences, and vital contributions of First Nations, Métis, and Inuit peoples. It is also an opportunity to reflect on the ongoing impacts of colonization and how we can take tangible steps toward reconciliation.

Over the month of June, we are reflecting on the past, present, and future contributions of Indigenous people across our health system and on the work being done to improve experiences and outcomes for Indigenous people throughout Manitoba.

By weaving together past, present, and future, we can bring together diverse perspectives and move forward in a good way while honouring the path that brought us here.

Leaving a legacy gift may be simpler than you think—and more flexible than you might expect.

Many people choose to include a gift in their will, allowing them to make a meaningful future contribution without affecting their finances today. But there are other options, too.

You can choose the approach that works best for you, such as:

• Naming the Foundation as a beneficiary of a life insurance policy
• Donating securities or stocks
• Designating the Foundation as a beneficiary of your RRSP, RRIF, pension, or TFSA

Every option looks a little different—but each one allows you to make a lasting impact on patient care and the future of health care in Manitoba.

There’s no minimum gift, and you don’t have to share your plans during your lifetime.

If you do choose to let us know, you’ll be welcomed into the Bannatyne Legacy Circle—where your commitment will be recognized and celebrated. If you choose to let us know but want to remain anonymous, we will of course respect your wishes.

As Leave a Legacy Month comes to a close, it’s a good time to think about the long-term impact you want to have.

What would your first reaction be if you found out you had a brain tumour — and that it was growing?

When Tusia Kozub learned that her brain tumour had grown by 2 cm since her last scan, she kept the news to herself.

“It was December, and I was anxious about it. It was overwhelming,” says Kozub. “I didn’t tell my family for two months.”

Thanks to the HSC Foundation donor-funded Gamma Knife technology at HSC_Winnipeg—which can safely treat brain tumours without incisions and with a low risk of damaging healthy tissue—Kozub found herself literally singing through her Gamma Knife procedure. AND was back home in a few hours.

May is Brain Tumour Awareness Month. In recognition, we invite you to read Kozub’s story and celebrate the difference donor support is making for Manitobans living with brain tumours.
