Canada is facing major threats to public services like health care. Addressing funding cuts, staffing shortages, and the rise of two-tier privatized health care will require a coordinated national response.

To bring Premiers into the conversation, MAHCP joined other National Union of Public and General Employees Components from across Canada in Charlottetown, P.E.I. to discuss these challenges (including the rise of AI and its impact on the workforce), and to push federal and provincial-territorial governments to protect the Canada Health Act and invest in public services.

The event coincided with the annual summer meeting of the Council of the Federation, which draws Premiers together to work collaboratively.

“Solidarity across sectors and across Canada shows Danielle Smith, Doug Ford, and other Premiers that Canadian unions are ready to stand up to cuts to health care and cuts to public services,” says Shona Litke, MAHCP Secretary and District 6 Director (Interlake-Eastern), who participated in the two-day event.

Attendees also joined the Canadian Health Coalition’s Rally for Healthcare, donning "Worth Fighting For" shirts and standing in solidarity with over 4,000 OPSEU (NUPGE) community health and social services members who have been on strike for more than ten weeks.

Violence is not "just part of the job."

The Manitoba Federation of Labour's new report, "Ending Manitoba’s Workplace Violence Epidemic," echoes what MAHCP members have been telling us: Workplace violence in health care is escalating, and staffing shortages, inadequate resources, and excessively long wait times are putting workers at greater risk.

In Manitoba, health care is the most dangerous sector in which to work. Across the province, injuries due to violence in the workplace more than tripled between 2015 and 2025. Employers and government must meet their responsibilities and work with unions to prevent violence, not normalize it.

MAHCP has taken the extraordinary step of suing the provincial government to compel enforcement of existing safety and health legislation in healthcare facilities.

We support the MFL calling on employers and the Manitoba government to take immediate action, including:

✊ Funding safe staffing levels
✊ Enforcing safety and health legislation, including existing requirements for safety and health committees and workplace violence reporting
✊ Strengthening violence-prevention and safety programs
✊ Properly investigating every violent incident

MAHCP member Samantha Yarmiy is an early-career occupational therapist working with clients in their homes through Community Therapy Services. Sam is passionate about meeting people where they're at and helping make living safer.

"With occupational therapy, we look at the person, we look at the environment, and we look at the occupation. Our goal is to determine adjustments to keep people safer and improve overall quality of life or level of independence."

Sam is out and about visiting clients in their homes, assessing them as they're transferring, recommending equipment, and considering room layout and available space, toilets, bathtubs, wheelchairs, and other devices to assist clients.

"As an OT, I get to help people with aspects of daily life that many of us take for granted. OT is there for people regardless of stage of life or ability, and you never know when you might need support due to an illness or injury."

Last week, MAHCP's Executive Council held an election for three positions, including MAHCP President, District Director of District 14, and District Director of District 16.

Congratulations to:

- Erin Helgason, elected as Director, District 16

All the above terms will begin after MAHCP's Biennial General Meeting on October 22, 2026.

MAHCP is governed by Table Officers (President, Vice-President, Treasurer, Secretary) and District Directors (16 Districts) who serve as a voice for MAHCP members and help advance allied health priorities. MAHCP’s Council is elected from within the membership, which means they’re all allied health professionals. MAHCP Members In Good Standing are eligible to vote in Council elections.
