June is National Indigenous History Month in Canada, a time to recognize and honour the rich histories, cultures, traditions, and contributions of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Peoples.
This month offers an opportunity to deepen our understanding of the diverse experiences and knowledge systems of Indigenous Peoples who have lived on these lands since time immemorial and whose presence, leadership, and contributions continue to shape communities across Canada today.
It is also a time for reflection, recognizing the ongoing impacts of colonization and considering how each of us can contribute to meaningful reconciliation through learning, relationship, and action.
National Indigenous History Month was first recognized in 2009 and became known as National Indigenous History Month in 2017. Throughout June, we encourage our community to take time to listen, learn, reflect, and honour Indigenous voices and stories.
