A LOVE LETTER TO MY CLIENTS: This comes up a lot. You, me, we, are hardest on ourselves... sometimes to the extent that we are our own enemy or simply working to our own detriment. But when I listen to you tell me your story, about your heart, the way you will mull over words to find the right ones that extend empathy to others and fight for constructive criticism for the self, and then you tell me “I’m really hard on myself”, I wish it was easier to convey that you should love yourself softly and yet the most in these moments. If only it were easier for you to see yourself from your listener’s window, as they peer out to look at the bird they just heard singing so beautifully. If only it were easier to gently stop yourself and realize that it is what you’re hardest on yourself for that is exactly what you should give yourself credit for. What if you treated yourself the way you treat your most loving friends? If only you could give yourself a few more moments of softness throughout the day, I wonder what you would notice shifting.

Happy Spring Equinox! As we transition into warmer weather and your friendly neighbourhood therapists strike a balance with growing their practices, EMBS Wellness will see some hourly changes. As I balance my commitments, responsibilities, and all the other things that make life, I spent March working and seeing clients Monday through Saturday, and I’m finally transitioning to 8-hour work days! I’ll be providing monthly updates and I appreciate your patience and understanding! Thanks for trusting me with your softness and tenderness, your tears and cuss words!

Gentle reminders:
❄️ The end of 2025 is near; your benefits might be resetting! If you haven’t used them, do it! You pay for them (this applies to therapy, massage, physio, dental, and so on).
❄️ Holidays are weird and can bring up everything on the multidimensional spectrum between joy and sadness. Take the time to talk, vent, cry, debrief, breathe through whatever is coming up and is asking to be processed.

Reintroduction/Fall Update (in pictures): People often ask me how I balance my work as a therapist with my personal life. This feels like an apt topic where (re)introducing myself is a good way of sharing the answer. I’ve been a social worker for almost 7 years now and working in social services and community for 12. It’s been a long lesson in balancing my work and life, not self-abandoning or giving up parts of myself. Over the years, I’ve faced different periods of burnout that have taken me out of the game for a while, some longer than others, and that have taught me unforgettable & invaluable lessons. I stopped believing in perfection and practicing non-judgment and radical acceptance. Practicing discipline and knowing (my) spirit is important. I have put knowing and honouring myself first, knowing this is the first step in knowing and honouring others. Echoed to me in a session recently, I was told, “to be loved is to be known” and this is true for self and others. I treat life and its gifts like medicine and nourishment. Music and poetry, among other forms of art, are medicine, offering connection to others near and far in time and space. Being close to others, physically and emotionally, sharing song and breaking bread is medicine. Good food and laughter is medicine. Remembering my loved ones and that grief is a portal offering time travel through memories is medicine. Listening and learning with discernment gives me strength. Smudging, moving, reminding my body we are strong is medicine. Smushing my dogs’ and babies’ faces is medicine. Life over the last month feels fast-moving, while dragging on some days, but I look and see that there was balance and there was medicine. You can see some of it in these photos 🍂 ❄️

Therapy is place to show up and witness yourself with the company of a therapist. Regardless of the modalities they’re trained in, the relationship between your therapist and you is part of the process. It’s a container that offers reflections and opportunities to explore the internal and external experiences of our lives. Giving yourself time to be held in moments of discomfort, to notice the pieces in the kaleidoscope that it is you, to allow yourself to be seen is what any one of us deserves. Sitting with our innermost selves and developing trust in ourselves in therapy can help any one of us take this new confidence out into the world, to work towards our goals and to deepen our relationships with the self and others. What are some of your goals and challenges you’d like to meet with a conviction and trust in your own abilities and capacity?
