Behavioural Health Foundation proudly hosted its 55th Annual General Meeting, bringing together board members, staff, residents, alumni, families, and community supporters to celebrate an incredible milestone.

For 55 years, BHF has been transforming lives through recovery, support, and community. This year's AGM was not only a reflection on our past achievements but also a celebration of the countless individuals whose recovery journeys continue to inspire us every day.

A special highlight of the event was our Recovery Tree, beautifully displayed with heartfelt messages from both current and former program members. Each message represented a story of strength, resilience, hope, and personal growth, serving as a powerful reminder of the lasting impact of recovery and the supportive community that makes it possible.

Thank you to everyone who attended, shared their stories, and helped make this event so meaningful. Together, we continue to grow a legacy of recovery, one life at a time.

55 Years. 55 Memories. One BHF Community.

As part of our 55-year anniversary recognition, today we are highlighting an important part of BHF’s Therapeutic Community: Peer Advisors.

For decades, Peer Advisors have helped welcome and support new resident members as they begin their treatment journey. Having someone available who understands what it is like to walk through BHF’s doors for the first time can help a new member feel more comfortable, connected, and less alone.

The program is rooted in one of the core messages of the BHF Philosophy:

“Self-help comes from helping others.”

By drawing on their own experiences, Peer Advisors can offer reassurance and encouragement to those just beginning their journey. In making themselves available to others, Peer Advisors also strengthen their own confidence, self-worth, responsibility, and connection to the community.

One past resident captured the heart of the role beautifully:

“It is easy to forget what you felt like when you first walked through those BHF front doors. I know I felt lost, scared and confused. As a Peer Advisor, I strive to make people feel more at home, just by saying, ‘Hey, I remember what it was like when I first got here. Things will get better.’”

Sometimes, one of the most powerful forms of support comes from someone who can simply say:

“I remember. I’ve been there too.”

As we celebrate 55 years of BHF, we honour the Peer Advisors, past and present, who have helped welcome new members, share hope, and strengthen the spirit of mutual support within our community.

55 Years. 55 Memories. One BHF Community.

As part of our 55-year anniversary recognition, today we are highlighting how BHF created new opportunities for outdoor recreation during an unprecedented time.

When the COVID-19 pandemic changed daily life in 2020, the BHF community had to find new ways to remain active, connected, and engaged. Off-site passes were limited, and family visits could only take place outdoors, making on-site recreation more important than ever.

With generous support from the United Way Emergency Community Support Fund, BHF purchased an Adventure Tower climber and swing set, creating a safe and enjoyable outdoor space for children living in our community.

The funding also helped BHF purchase sports and leisure equipment for resident members, including volleyballs, bocce ball sets, street hockey equipment, soccer balls, badminton and basketball equipment, and more.

At a time when so many regular activities were unavailable, these new resources provided opportunities for children, families, and resident members to move, play, spend time outdoors, and connect with one another.

What began as a response to a challenging time became a lasting addition to the BHF community. The equipment continues to remind us of the importance of recreation, movement, connection, and finding moments of joy close to home.

As we celebrate 55 years of BHF, we thank United Way Winnipeg for helping BHF create welcoming outdoor spaces and meaningful recreational opportunities for our community.

55 Years. 55 Memories. One BHF Community.

As part of our 55-year anniversary recognition, today we are highlighting the people who help keep our property colourful and welcoming throughout the summer: BHF’s Summer Groundskeepers.

With support from the Government of Canada through the Canada Summer Jobs program, BHF has been able to provide meaningful seasonal employment opportunities for resident members and young people from the surrounding community. The program helps young people gain paid work experience and develop valuable employment skills.

From cutting grass and caring for flower gardens to watering, weeding, planting, and maintaining outdoor spaces, the results of their hard work can be seen throughout BHF. Summer Groundskeepers also help care for recreational areas, visiting spaces, children’s play areas, and BHF’s Traditional grounds.

These positions provide opportunities to build practical skills, develop confidence, work as part of a team, and gain valuable employment experience. At the same time, participants help bring colour, beauty, and care to the grounds enjoyed by resident members, children, families, staff, and visitors.

As we celebrate 55 years of BHF, we recognize our Summer Groundskeepers, past and present, and thank the Government of Canada’s Canada Summer Jobs program for helping make these employment opportunities possible.

As part of our 55-year anniversary recognition, today we are highlighting the Artwork on Display at BHF.

A walk through the halls of BHF reveals more than artwork on the walls. It reveals pieces of the people, experiences, and stories that have shaped our community.

Over the years, many talented resident members and staff have brought colour, creativity, and meaning to BHF’s shared spaces. Paintings, drawings, beadwork, carvings, murals, and other handmade creations have become woven into the character and history of our building.

Some pieces brighten a hallway or room, while others reflect meaningful stories of culture, recovery, hope, personal growth, and connection. Together, they create a visual history of some of the people who have called BHF home.

Each creation represents the time, imagination, and personal expression of the person who made it. By sharing their creativity, resident members and staff have left lasting contributions for others to appreciate.

The artwork displayed throughout BHF reminds us that creativity can be a meaningful part of healing, reflection, connection, and belonging. It also reminds us that everyone who becomes part of our community can leave something meaningful behind.

As we celebrate 55 years of BHF, we honour the artists whose work has helped make our shared spaces brighter, more welcoming, and full of history.

55 Years. 55 Memories. One BHF Community.

As part of our 55-year anniversary recognition, today we are remembering an important chapter in BHF’s history: Youth Programs.

For many years, BHF provided residential treatment through its Female and Male Youth Services, supporting young people between the ages of 12 and 17 who were experiencing challenges related to substance use. Youth came from communities across Manitoba to live in a structured Therapeutic Community, continue their education, and work toward personal goals through individualized treatment planning.

At the heart of these programs were the relationships built between youth, staff, peers, families, educators, and community supports. Young people were encouraged to develop healthier routines, build confidence, explore their strengths, and discover new possibilities for their lives.

Sometimes the most meaningful moments came through a simple outing, a shared experience, or an opportunity for a young person to discover that life could hold connection, enjoyment, and hope beyond substance use.

BHF’s Youth Programs closed due to funding challenges. Although these services are no longer offered, the programs remain an important part of BHF’s history and the memories of those who participated in and supported them

As we celebrate 55 years of BHF, we honour the young people who became part of our community and the staff, families, educators, Elders, and supporters who encouraged them along their journeys.

As part of our 55-year anniversary recognition, today we are highlighting a familiar piece of BHF history: the BHF Totem Pole.

Standing in the heart of BHF’s Midway, the totem pole has been part of our community for more than four decades. It was carved by a BHF program member in 1981, leaving behind a lasting contribution that continues to hold a meaningful place within our shared space.

Although the program member was from Manitoba, the carving also serves as a reminder of BHF’s beginnings in X-Kalay, a community that originated on the West Coast before its philosophy of recovery, mutual help, and community was brought to Manitoba.

For more than 40 years, the totem pole has remained in the Midway as a quiet connection to BHF’s past and a reminder of the many resident members who have contributed their talents, creativity, and stories to our community.

Today, it remains a familiar and meaningful part of BHF, connecting our past with our present and reminding us that every person who becomes part of the community can leave something meaningful behind.

As we celebrate 55 years of BHF, we honour the people, artwork, and stories that have helped shape our spaces and become part of our shared history.

As part of our 55-year anniversary recognition, today we are looking back at a major milestone in BHF’s history: the renovation and official reopening of our main building.

During the 1980s, the organization undertook a significant renovation of its historic main residence in St. Norbert. The project helped improve the building and prepare it to continue providing a safe and welcoming home for the growing Therapeutic Community.

The renovation was made possible through the support of government departments and agencies, foundations, businesses, community organizations, and individuals. In the original opening program, the Board of Directors and members of the St. Norbert Foundation offered special thanks to:

The renovation represented more than an improvement to a building. It demonstrated the strength of community partnership and a shared belief in the Foundation’s work. It helped preserve a historic space while preparing it to continue serving resident members and families for generations to come.

Their generosity helped renew more than a building. It helped strengthen a home for healing, hope, and community.

As part of our 55-year anniversary recognition, today we are honouring a sacred tradition that has been part of BHF for more than two decades: the Northwinds Lodge Sundance.

The Sundance is a sacred ceremony and a place of healing, strength, prayer, sacrifice, and connection. For individuals on their recovery journey, it can offer a powerful sense of purpose, belonging, cultural connection, and spiritual renewal.

Through prayer, ceremony, sacrifice, and the support of community, participants are reminded that healing is a journey and that no one has to walk it alone. The Sundance can provide a space to reconnect with oneself, culture, community, and the teachings carried forward by those who came before.

Year after year, the Sundance has continued to carry forward teachings, prayers, and collective strength. It is a place where people can find their voice, reclaim their strength, remember who they are, and build a stronger foundation for the future.

As we celebrate 55 years of BHF, we honour the Sundance Chiefs, Elders, Knowledge Keepers, dancers, singers, firekeepers, helpers, volunteers, and community members who have carried this sacred ceremony forward with commitment, care, and respect.
