As a child and youth therapist, I spend a lot of time thoughtfully choosing playful, creative, and sensory-supportive tools that help children feel safe, connected, and regulated in therapy. 🤍
Therapy for children doesn’t always happen sitting face-to-face talking. Sometimes it looks like stickers, clay, candy, markers, games, and building toys. 🌿
A few favourites around the office lately:
✨ Stickers
A tiny moment of joy, connection, predictability, and accomplishment. Honestly… stickers are basically guaranteed here for all ages 😂
🌈 Smelly markers
Creative expression + sensory input through scent can help children feel grounded, focused, and calm.
🍬 Candy & sour treats
Taste can support regulation too! Crunchy, chewy, or sour snacks can help bring children back into their bodies during stress or overwhelm.
👐 Clay & playdough
Squishing, rolling, and creating helps release tension, support grounding, and make emotional expression feel safer.
🌸 Flower snaps/building toys
Building supports focus, problem solving, repetitive calming movement, and side-by-side connection without pressure to “perform” socially.
🎲 Play-based tools & games
Play helps lower defenses while building frustration tolerance, emotional awareness, flexibility, and confidence.
Creating a therapy space that feels warm, safe, and engaging takes intention — and I’m grateful to offer a space where children can regulate, connect, create, and simply be themselves. 🤍
