Most of us were taught that resilience means bouncing back.

It doesn't.

And that one misunderstanding is quietly shaping how we lead our teams — often in ways we don't intend.

Myth or Muscle? How Teams Really Bounce Back is happening live June 10th at 2 PM ET. If resilience has ever felt like pressure dressed up as support, this one's worth your time.

Vet Alliance Members can register through the May Noteworthy Newsletter. (A recording will be made available to Vet Alliance members in Octopoda, after the live session.)

When someone on your team is struggling after a hard stretch — what's your first instinct?

For most leaders, it's some version of: they need to be more resilient.

That instinct is worth examining.

Our latest learning session, Myth or Muscle? How Teams Really Bounce Back, reframes what resilience actually is — and what we've been getting wrong about it, despite our best efforts.

Join Dr. Shona Kowtecky, live on June 10th at 2 PM ET.
Vet Alliance Members can register through the May Noteworthy Newsletter. (A recording will be made available to Vet Alliance members in Octopoda, after the live session.)

This week, our National Director, Engagement and Practice Services, Senani Ratnayake attended the Canadian Animal Health Institute (CAHI) Convention, representing Vet Alliance as a voice for all of our independently owned member practices. With a focus on Innovation and the Future of Animal Health, Senani moderated a panel discussion on "Consumer Trends in Companion Animal Health".
We are so proud to be able to participate in this important event, learning and growing while continuing to contribute and challenge. We remain engaged throughout the year, as Senani is also the Chair of the CAHI Communications Committee. Keeping abreast of issues that will impact our hospitals, and providing representation amongst Industry leaders, Vet Alliance is committed to the success and wellbeing of our member practices.

Curious about how Vet Alliance boosts the success of independently owned hospitals across the country? Then let's connect to explore how a Vet Alliance membership can benefit you!

You've probably heard it. "Just be empathetic." It shows up everywhere—from veterinary articles and conferences, to performance reviews and team meetings—often without any real guidance on what it actually looks like in a clinical setting, or what it specifically requires of you.

Whether you tend to feel everything and struggle to move forward, or you move fast and have been told you need to feel more, this session is for you. Because here's what doesn't get said often enough: most people in this profession don't lack empathy. The problem is that we treat it like an on/off button—when it's actually a dial, and not every situation (or person!) needs the same dose.

Because it's not about feeling more or feeling less. It's about correctly using the difference between empathy and compassion in a clinical setting where your job is to help, not just to feel.

You'll walk away knowing exactly where you get stuck—and what to do instead. One simple tool, immediate application, widespread benefit: a clearer way to show up for your clients, your teammates, and yourself. The hardest parts of this job made a little less hard, a lot more sustainable.

Register now—and finally have something more specific to follow than "be empathetic."

Leadership in veterinary medicine asks a lot of people.
It asks leaders to support teams through difficult days, navigate constant change, make challenging decisions, and continue showing up with compassion, confidence, and clarity.

That's why guidED exists.
guidED was created to support veterinary leaders through meaningful learning, practical leadership development, honest conversations, and a community that understands the realities of this profession.

Registration for guidED 2026 is now open.

Vet Alliance Members receive exclusive discounted registration rates, including preferred pricing for a second attendee from the same practice, because we believe shared learning leads to stronger collaboration, implementation, and long-term impact within practices.

We can't wait to welcome both returning attendees and first-time guidED participants to this year's experience.

Final session alert 🚨
As a continuation of our Office Hours Financial Series, David McCormick and Dr. Elizabeth Bellavance are back to guide us through one final, essential topic:
Exit Planning – Start Now!

As independent practice owners, understanding what your practice is worth - and how to influence that value well before a transition - is critical. How can you assess where you are, identify what changes may be needed, and understand the impact of your decisions, without the right data and insight?

Whether you're actively planning your succession, or wanting to be a more informed, proactive business owner, we invite you to join us.

📅 Wednesday, April 15th
🕖 7:00–8:00 PM ET

Excited to attend?
Vet Alliance Members can register through the March newsletter or by contacting [email protected]. Members can also access recordings and revisit earlier sessions in Octopoda via the Office Hours Collection.

Not a member but interested?
We're offering a limited number of special invitations for those interested in joining live. Reach out to Andrea Adshade, or connect with your Boehringer Ingelheim representative to learn more.

Are decisions slowing your practice down?
When teams aren’t clear on who decides what, people either hesitate… or overstep.

Both can lead to:
• Delayed workflows
• Frustration within the team
• Reduced confidence with clients

Tomorrow, join Lucie Langevin-Neil for “Decide, Check In or Escalate: Decision Clarity for All Roles.”
In this session, you’ll learn how leaders can build decision clarity without having to make every decision themselves — creating a structure where teams know when to decide, when to collaborate, and when to escalate.

You’ll leave with a practical worksheet to help your team strengthen alignment, accountability, and confidence in everyday decisions.

Vet Alliance Members can register through the March Noteworthy Newsletter.

Back by popular demand.
As a continuation of our Office Hours Financial Series in 2025, David McCormick and Dr. Elizabeth Bellavance are back to take us through two more topics. As independent practice owners, you need to know what your practice is worth well before you decide to sell or take on partners. How can you know where you are, what changes might be necessary, how to affect change, and what impact your actions and inaction have, when you don't have the data or understanding?

Whether you are in the midst of succession planning, or focused on being a proactive and well-versed business owner, we invite you to join us.
