Today is International Picnic Day

If you were wondering what fun outing you could partake in today, why not celebrate Picnic Day? Invite some of your special people, pick a close by park or outdoors location, fill the picnic basket with your favourites, maybe even have a potluck, and bring an activity or two to have fun with.

International Picnic Day is observed on June 18th each year. Origins of the picnic are said to date back to the period following the French Revolution. At this time, commoners were invited to visit the Royal Gardens and many brought a meal to enjoy while visiting this beautiful location.

If you know someone who has recently lost a close family member or friend, invite them along. This will hopefully add comfort and some joy to their day.

Derek David Clifford Schriver

It is with deep sadness that the family of Derek David Clifford Schriver, affectionately known as “Heavy D” announces his passing at the age of 52. Derek was born on November 13, 1973, in Woodstock, New Brunswick.

Derek loved his children deeply and was incredibly proud of their many achievements. He is survived by his five children, Aslynne Schriver (Riley Boone), Landan Schriver, Kayden Schriver (Carter Peabody), Bransin Schriver, and Ryland Schriver; his sister Lisa Schriver (Ian Thomson); his brother Dwight Schriver (Krista); and his niece Brooke Schriver.

He was predeceased by his father, David Frederick Schriver, and his mother, Donna Marie Schriver (Stiles).

Derek studied nursing at the University of Presque Isle. He worked as a nurse at the Houlton Regional Hospital, Woodstock Manor and Perth Manor. He truly enjoyed his work – especially the time he spent connecting with the patients and residents, who came to appreciate his kindness, humour, and genuine care.

With a kind heart and easygoing nature, Derek formed meaningful connections wherever he went. He was known for his quick wit, easy laughter, and his ability to strike up a conversation with anyone. His warmth and genuine interest in others left a lasting impression on everyone he met.

Above all, Derek’s greatest pride was his children. He spoke of them fondly and enjoyed celebrating their accomplishments and the people they were becoming.

He will be remembered for his big heart, his laughter, and his constant teasing. Derek’s presence will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

The family would like to sincerely thank Integrity Home Health Services for the care and compassion they provided to Derek over the past three years.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, June 20, 2026, at Carleton Funeral Home, 337 Lockhart Mill Road, Jacksonville NB from 12 to 3PM.

A Uniquely Canadian Memorial
‘Lord Stanley’s Gift’ Monument

This monument commemorates the donation of the ‘Stanley Cup’, from the 6th Governor General of Canada, Lord Stanley.

The monument is approximately 20 feet tall and is constructed of metal ribs made of silver. The bowl shape of the tribute is representative of the original bowl, which was first dedicated by Lord Stanley in 1892.

The origins of the Stanley Cup date back to 1889, when then newly arrived Governor General Lord Stanley attended Montreal’s Winter Carnivale. It is there, he was first exposed to the sport of hockey and became an avid fan of the game. Stanley had come to Canada from England, where hockey was not played at that time.

A few years later, Stanley purchased a silver bowl to be given as a prize to the top Canadian amateur hockey team, the winner of an annual competition. The original name of the cup was, the Dominion Hockey Challenge Cup, however, this was soon replaced by the name Stanley Cup.

A decade and a half later, in 1906, professional hockey clubs became eligible to compete for the cup.
A few years later, a fledgling National Hockey League entered into an agreement with the trustees of the cup which continues to this day.

The gift of a silver bowl from an English Lord has become one of the most sought after and coveted trophies in sports and this… has inspired generations to play hockey. A made in Canada award from the 19th century sees hockey’s finest compete for it each spring.

Funerals, Because Sometimes Actions Speak Louder than Words

The requirements of the pandemic meant that many people were unable to say good-bye to loved ones in person. Restrictions and mandates meant that many families needed to mourn in isolation, which was heart-breaking.

Life has returned to normal. Social venues like movie theaters and sporting arenas now host thousands of people, and we in funeral services continue to offering families the opportunity to say goodbyes in person.

A funeral provides exactly this, a normal way to acknowledge the passing of someone close, someone who in some special way had a positive effect on our lives. Funerals also provide a location to unite and mourn. A funeral is a place where well-wishers can provide comfort and support.

Yes, many things seem to be changing, but the time-honoured ways of paying respects and honouring our loved ones doesn’t need to be one of them. We do have choices and sometimes the value of some of the actions we take isn’t always immediately visible to us. Yes, we can speak fondly about them, but to meet and honour them as a community holds many benefits based on compassion and love.

In Loving Memory of Leslie Edison MacMaster

Leslie Edison MacMaster passed away on June 6, 2026, at the age of 92.

Born on April 22, 1934, Leslie lived a long life rooted in faith, family, and the simple pleasures of everyday living. A religious man throughout his life, he found comfort and purpose in his faith and was a devoted attendee of church.

Over the years, Leslie spent time working in the woods and peddling apples. He enjoyed a life that kept him connected to his community and to the people he met along the way.

One of the greatest blessings of Leslie’s life was finding his beloved wife, Lila. Though they found each other later in life, the two shared 31 years of marriage together, building a life filled with companionship, faith, and love. This was also when Leslie inherited a large extended family that has grown to include several grandchildren, more great grandchildren, nieces and nephews as well as one great great grand daughter. Their story is a reminder that it is never too late to find someone to walk beside you through life’s journey.

Those who knew Leslie will remember his bright, twinkling eyes, his boyish smile, and his playful ability to tease those he cared about. He had a warm presence that brought joy to others, and family and friends will cherish the many memories they shared with him. His passing marks the end of a long-life journey, and he will be remembered by all who knew and loved him.

Leslie is survived by his beloved wife, Lila; his stepchildren, Jennifer, Henry, Willis, Juanita, Marilyn, Lisa, and Richard; as well as his sisters, Carol, Patricia, and Dorene, and his brother, Willis.

He was predeceased by his parents, Madeline and Willis MacMaster, by his siblings Aulder, Lloyd, Audrey, Mary, Gale, Jean, Arthur, and Shirley, one stepson Douglas White and one step-grandson Michael White.

Cemetery Terms
What are Interment Rights?

Families will often talk about their cemetery plot, using the phrase: “who can go into the family plot.” When the rights to a plot or parcel of land are purchased, it is not the land that is being bought, but rather the rights to use this land for burial. Families are essentially buying burial privileges for an identified plot of land.

Interment rights are identified on a Certificate of Interment Rights which is given to a family following the purchase of a location at the cemetery. These rights specify the location or ‘address’ of the plot, the area of land (so many square feet or meters) and how many interments are permitted at this location. This is a legal document and the person or persons who are listed on the Certificate are responsible to make decisions concerning the plot. They decide who is interred and where, and also decide on other matters such as memorialization.

Some families provide cemeteries with decisions made concerning how the plot is to be used. They will assign burial privileges to certain individuals for each grave; this record, essentially becomes a master plan for the plot.

When purchasing a cemetery location, it is important to ask cemetery representatives about not only immediate needs, but also how the plot can be used in the future. This will help make sure the family’s needs over time are addressed.
