Tri-County Women’s Centre is offering free counselling therapy and peer support sessions for individuals dealing with mild to moderate mental health concerns in the Tri-County area.

What we offer:
- One on one counselling therapy for individuals dealing with mild to moderate mental health concerns.
- Peer support sessions for those who may not need therapy but could benefit from talking to someone.
- In person sessions in the town of Yarmouth.
- Virtual sessions for anyone in the Tri-Counties.
- Multilingual sessions are available in English, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Urdu, Hindi, and Punjabi, depending on therapist availability.

There seems to be a narrative out there that says adult children going "no contact" with their parent(s) is a "trend". People are blaming therapists for telling their clients to cut off their family. People assume that the adult child must be unstable, angry, bitter, impulsive, or callous about their decision to distance themselves.

While this may be true for a select few, this is far from the truth in the vast majority of situations.

No good therapist is going to tell someone to cut off their parent. Estrangement is a very last resort in most cases.

What I see in my practice is that the people who are estranged from their parent came to this very difficult decision after YEARS of abuse, disrespect, neglect, invalidating, and grieving a relationship that could (and should) have been. They spent most of their life surviving the person who was supposed to unconditionally love and protect them. They tried time after time to connect, to be heard, to have some semblance of a relationship with them.

But a person can only take so much. Please do not judge the estranged child for having to walk away to protect their own wellbeing. Know that they grieved deeply for the person they had to walk away from. This is not a trend. It is survival.

People who have chronic illness deal with daily battles you know nothing about.

Cancelled plans = guilt, disappointment, and frustration

Intense fatigue, pain, or other symptoms = lost income, lost relationships, lost experiences

Sharing about illness and symptoms = seeking understanding, not attention or sympathy

Good days = hope, desire to do ALL THE THINGS and then paying dearly for it and dealing with the disappointment and frustration of not being able to do what you used to.

People expecting "normal" from you = feeling like a constant disappointment and burden for not being able to keep connected with everyone or for needing help but feeling unable to ask for it.

People who are chronically ill do not want to be isolated, cancel plans, be unable to keep up with housework, or nap all day. We are just trying to make it through life with what we have. Please be gentle and understanding with us. ❤️
