Memorial Tattoos Evolving to a New Level

Memorial tattoos have existed for centuries, providing a permanent inked tribute to a loved one. Depending on where the tattoo is located, the image, name or symbol can serve as a private or public expression of the person and the relationship lost.

A relatively new tattooing process is gaining popularity which allows for the infusion of a small amount of a loved one’s ashes into the ink to create an even more personal connection. The ash-infused ink is then applied to the skin by a skilled tattoo artist. The artist will require very fine, sifted ashes to prevent the ink from clogging, but when complete, the tattoo will look no different from a regular one.

For health and safety, it is recommended to only use a trusted tattoo artist and to ensure the ashes are handled in a safe manner, which may require the assistance of a specialized company to process, sterilize and mix the remains with the ink.

Getting a commemorative tattoo infused with a loved one’s remains will not be for everyone, but it can serve as a powerful way to remember a loved one while always keeping them close.

Funeral Planning Checklist

• Compose a list of everyone (including the best way to contact them) who needs to be notified of your passing.
• Give the name of your executor or those who will be responsible for your arrangements to service providers including care facilities and the funeral home.
• What type of service will you have? Religious, secular, military, other?
• Select your funeral home provider and cemetery.
• Traditional casket service or memorial service with urn?
• Casket selection / Urn selection
• Provide details for the obituary, indicating the names of next of kin. Ensure correct spelling of names.
• Music selections for the service
• Create notes for the eulogy and select who will read it.
• Indicate preferences for readings and poems for the service and who will say them.
• Indicate your preferences for memorialization at cemetery.
• Indicate preferences for pallbearers
• Note your preferences of which photos are to be used for the service.
• Indicate preferred clothing.
• Create a list of meaningful personal items which can be used to show hobbies and passions.

Depending on individual preferences, there may be additional items that can be added to this list. Reflecting on these decisions is a starting point. Discussing these choices with a funeral director will help clarify what your funeral plan can include.

Dealing with Loss
Rabbit Hole, the Movie (2010)

Going down the rabbit hole is an expression from the book, Alice in Wonderland. To go down the rabbit hole means that your world is turned upside down.

This drama, starring Nicole Kidman (Becca) and Aaron Eckart (Howie) follows a married couple after the accidental death of their son.

Scenes unfold and Becca, despite the obvious pain she is experiencing, tells anyone who asks… that they are “Hanging in there.” There is an earnest attempt by the couple to heal, though the grief they experience is so overwhelming both are unable to move forward.

The movie has a somber mood, as would be expected, depicting a grieving couple unable to get back to normal. Is there an epiphany they can experience that will help them find the answers they seek? And, who is the young teenager who Becca befriends and what is the significance of this relationship?

Rabbit Hole explores the possibilities about rebuilding a life after loss and speaks to the baby steps that are sometimes needed when grief is overwhelming. This account of grief does not offer the ‘feel-good feelings’ we all desire in a movie, but offers hope and understanding to those who grieve.

Letting Emotions Out
Breaking the Piñata!

Imagine being able to capture all the emotions that you are holding inside, the ones which are associated with your grief, and then placing them into a piñata. Afterwards, taking a stick to break it open, releasing all that you have been holding in. Visualize the physical swinging of the stick, the breaking open of the piñata, and all your emotions spilling out. Releasing your stress this way would be cathartic!

Grief asks us to process emotions that we may have never felt before. While some people are better at processing and releasing emotions, others hold back which can delay the grieving process. When emotions which surface are held back, this can actually do damage. Unprocessed emotions get stored in our bodies and can affect how we think about ourselves and others, they can lead to fatigue and stress related illnesses and we may experience anxiety and depression.

So how do we break open the piñata and release these emotions?

First it is important to acknowledge and identify that these emotions are related to the grief you are experiencing. Feel the emotion and identify where it surfaces in your body. Often people who are grieving will feel sadness and it will come forward as a heaviness or tightness in their chest and throat or it may be expressed by tears.

Breathing into that space, the one where the emotions reside, sitting with the sadness, and then accepting that this is a normal reaction to the loss we’ve experienced can help us release and shift naturally. When we can show compassion to the emotions and to our tears, we are recognizing that the grief surfacing is necessary for the healing process.

So, try to better understand the true reason why these emotions are surfacing and if possible, let these feelings out as you experience them. Yes, we can break the piñata and release a flood of emotions all at once, but by dealing with emotions on an ongoing basis, it reduces overall stress levels and is more conducive to good grieving.

A Green Burial Option
The Mushroom Burial Suit

As scientists explore options to achieve an environmentally friendly burial, some pioneering solutions are being developed. The Mushroom Burial Suit is one such innovation; Jae Lee created this funeral garment as part of the Infinity Burial Project associated with the Coeio brand. The main objective in this suit’s design is environmental sustainability.

The suit is made using 100% biodegradable materials including organic cotton and a mixture of mushroom mycelium. These fungi are instrumental as a catalyst in the decomposition of human remains. The end result is essentially a body becoming part of its natural burial environment.

There are some drawbacks to this approach. Municipal and provincial governments have clear guidelines for the disposition of human remains, which can vary by jurisdiction. A minimum of 48 inches of ground cover and the placing of the body in a secure container are examples of a couple of these regulations. These laws are in place to ensure proper health and safety standards are met as decomposing bodies can present serious health risks.

Funerals: A Safe Space to Mourn a Loved One

At a funeral home, funeral services will unfold in a number of ways depending on how the family wishes to honour their loved one.

One thing that is for certain, this is a time of respect. The etiquettes associated with attending a service ask all attendees to be cordial at this time of reverence. Appropriate conduct is expected. The happenings at a service are to honour or pay tribute to a loved one. The family has lost someone close and the need for all attendees to act in a dignified way is paramount.

This atmosphere fosters an inclusive space where everyone feels safe and secure. The differences that separate some from others are put aside. This is a time to come together and support one another. It is not uncommon for those who have lost touch with one another to reunite, reminisce and reestablish relationships.

One of our goals when providing funeral services is to create a safe space and atmosphere for all in attendance.
