THE MOST COMMON REASONS FOR FAILED INDUCTION
Induction of labor doesn’t always work the way doctors expect, and when it “fails,” it usually means the cervix doesn’t open enough or labor doesn’t progress despite medical help. Here are the main reasons why that happens:
1. Unfavorable cervix (low Bishop score)
If the cervix is still:
Hard
Closed
Not thinned out (not effaced)
…it may not respond well to induction drugs.
This is the most common reason for failed induction.
2. First-time pregnancy (Primigravida)
Women having their first baby often:
Take longer to respond
Have slower cervical dilation
This doesn’t mean failure immediately, but it increases the chances.
3. Incorrect timing of induction
If induction is done when:
The body is not hormonally ready
Baby is not ready
…the uterus may not respond properly.
4. Inadequate uterine contractions
Even with medications like Oxytocin:
Contractions may be too weak
Or too irregular
Without strong, consistent contractions, labor won’t progress.
5. Baby’s position or size
Baby facing the wrong direction (e.g., posterior position)
Large baby (macrosomia)
Head not well engaged in the pelvis
These can prevent descent and slow or stop labor.
6. Cephalopelvic disproportion (CPD)
This means:
Baby’s head is too big
Or the mother’s pelvis is too small
Labor cannot progress no matter how strong contractions are.
7. Ruptured membranes without progress
If the water breaks (naturally or artificially) but:
Labor doesn’t start or progress
…it increases infection risk and may lead to stopping the induction.
8. Maternal factors
Obesity
Stress or anxiety
Dehydration
Certain medical conditions (e.g., hypertension, diabetes)
These can interfere with effective contractions.
9. Incorrect dosing or method of induction
Sometimes:
The dose of drugs is too low
Or the method (gel, tablet, drip) is not suitable
This can lead to poor response.
10. Fetal distress
If the baby shows signs of distress during induction:
The process may be stopped
Emergency delivery (often C-section) may be needed
Important to know
“Failed induction” is usually diagnosed after:
Adequate time (often 12–24 hours or more depending on protocol)
Proper attempts with medications
