RBM Partnership to End Malaria

Our vision is of a world free from the burden of malaria. for good.

The RBM Partnership to End Malaria is the largest global platform for coordinated action against malaria. Originally established as Roll Back Malaria (RBM) Partnership in 1998, it mobilizes for action and resources and forges consensus among partners. The Partnership is comprised of more than 500 partners, including malaria endemic countries, their bilateral and multilateral development partners,

the private sector, nongovernmental and community-based organizations, foundations, and research and academic institutions. The RBM Partnership Secretariat is hosted by the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) in Geneva, Switzerland.

Innovations including dual-active ingredient mosquito nets, malaria vaccines, improved diagnostics and treatments, and targeted data are creating new opportunities to accelerate progress.

LIVE FROM THE PAN-AFRICAN PARLIAMENT | South Africa

Today marks a historic moment: the first-ever Malaria Session at the Pan-African Parliament, jointly convened by and (The Coalition of Parliamentarians to End Malaria in Africa).

On the agenda: parliamentarians from across the continent will review the state of malaria in Africa where 95% of global cases and deaths occur and consider the PAP/COPEMA Joint Malaria Action Plan 2026–2030 for adoption.

Speakers include representatives from , , , Partnership, Global Fund, Serum Institute and Santé Afrique, alongside a panel on innovation and private sector engagement in the fight against malaria.

As lawmakers, budget approvers, and oversight actors, parliamentarians hold the power to champion increased domestic financing and hold governments accountable for malaria elimination commitments.

Malaria is preventable and curable. With strong political leadership and sustained domestic financing, Africa can end it.

In 2025, the global response to malaria was marked by both tough challenges and hard-won gains. Despite severe cuts to global health funding and increasing evidence of parasite resistance, we have plenty of reasons for cautious optimism.

The RBM Partnership to End Malaria is proud to celebrate the release of Medicines for Malaria Venture (MMV) for Malaria Venture's 2025 Annual Report.
From protecting pregnant women to developing the first-ever optimized treatments for newborns weighing 2 to 5 kg, MMV and its global network are turning scientific milestones into real-world momentum.

2010: First World Cup in Africa & biggest malaria gains in decades: In 2010, South Africa hosted the first World Cup on African soil, a landmark moment for the continent and one of the most significant milestones in football history. Meanwhile, Africa was also demonstrating leadership and progress on the global stage in its malaria fight, with 11 African countries and one territory successfully cutting malaria cases by more than half.

1971: First international Women’s football game is played & Tu Youyou discovers lifesaving malaria drug: In 1971, the Dutch team played the first international women’s football match recognized by FIFA against France – paving the way for the Women’s World Cup. It was a big year for women in football, and a big year for women in science, because at the same time in China, Tu Youyou and her team discovered artemisinin, an antimalarial treatment which would revolutionise global malaria treatment and save millions of lives.

1950: Uruguay defeat Brazil at record-breaking World Cup & USA eliminates malaria: In 1950, Brazil was so certain of its victory in the World Cup that it had already written and recorded a victory samba – only to have the glory snatched by Uruguay in what would be the most attended World Cup to date. At the same time, another nail-biting final was unfolding in the Americas: the USA was bringing malaria to its knees through large-scale vector control efforts, with elimination achieved in 1951.

The Francophone region continues to carry a disproportionate burden of malaria. In 2024, there were 118 million cases of malaria in Francophone countries. Malaria incidence rates increased by 24 percent and death rates from the disease by 5 percent in these French-speaking countries.

These are more than statistics. These are dreams nipped in the bud, health systems struggling, pandemic responses delayed by the looming shadow and strain of malaria. The Big Push against malaria in Francophone Africa places country leadership at the center and calls for more global support to eliminate malaria, strengthen health systems and enable countries and people achieve their full potential.

Public health meets climate action. 🔗🌱

Our CEO Dr. Michael Adekunle Charles recently visited Ede North, Osun State, Nigeria, to witness a brilliant example of environmental sustainability in action.

Working with BASF, field teams are using a smart household marking system to distribute new bed nets while collecting old, worn-out ones. The best part? These old nets are recycled into alternative plastic products rather than harming local ecosystems. 🔄♻️

This milestone builds on the vital leadership of Jessica Rockwood (Global Director for the EOLIN Project) in managing end-of-life nets sustainably.
