Every year, an estimated 4.5 trillion cigarette butts are discarded into our streets, rivers, lakes, oceans, and soil. 🚬 These are not just litter; they are toxic waste.

Cigarette filters contain plastics and release harmful chemicals and microplastics into the environment, polluting ecosystems and threatening wildlife. ☠️🌊🐠

Addressing to***co's environmental footprint requires action across its entire lifecycle — from cultivation and production to consumption and disposal, including e-cigarettes.

On , Parties are called upon to fully implement Article 18 of the WHO FCTC, which addresses the protection of the environment and the health of persons in relation to to***co cultivation and manufacture.

It is time to hold the to***co industry accountable for the environmental damage and waste associated with its products. Protecting public health also means protecting our planet. 🌱

The WHO FCTC, the world’s first public health treaty, includes obligations on governments to prevent and reduce to***co consumption, ni****ne addiction and exposure to to***co smoke.

Article 14 of the WHO FCTC calls on Parties to implement evidence-based measures promoting to***co cessation and adequate treatment for to***co dependence. Measures to support to***co cessation include making national quitlines and counselling services available, integrating cessation interventions into primary health care, and facilitating affordable access to approved cessation medicines. In many countries, to***co users do not have access to such life-saving cessation support.

📣 Youth-oriented marketing of ni****ne products | 🚭

Ni****ne products are often promoted in ways that appeal to young people, including bright, colourful packaging 🎨 and sweet or fruity flavour descriptions 🍓🍬.

Research shows that this type of marketing can make these products more attractive to adolescents and may reduce the impact of health warnings ⚠️.

Flavours such as mint, fruit, candy, and bubblegum—and additives that make products taste smoother or sweeter—are often used to:

• mask the harshness of to***co 😶‍🌫️
• make initiation easier 🧠
• increase appeal among young people 👩‍🎓👨‍🎓

World Health Organization (WHO) warns that these design and marketing strategies contribute to youth uptake and increase the risk of ni****ne addiction ⚠️.

Past , the Secretariat of the WHO FCTC delivered an intervention on Health in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

The world remains off track to achieve the health-related by 2030. In this context, implementation of the WHO FCTC is not only a public health priority, but also a powerful accelerator of sustainable development.

Strong to***co control reduces , protects household incomes, safeguards the environment, and supports domestic resource mobilization.
Yet the global to***co epidemic continues to impede SDG progress, claiming more than 7 million lives every year, with a growing burden in LMICs.

It is essential to sustain strong global action to implement the WHO FCTC and the Protocol to Eliminate Illicit Trade in To***co Products.

We urge all governments to prioritize preventing ni****ne addiction among young people.

The Convention Secretariat stands ready to support Parties in accelerating progress towards the SDGs by 2030.
