After my Power Vinyasa class at Karma Teachers yesterday, I had someone, whom I only assume, is from the downtown east side, approach me. I know this is a total judgement call but that's beside the point.
She was very curious about the physical and mental benefits of yoga, which made me very excited to talk to her. I could tell that her energy was very low and offered her some tea and a seat. She proceeded to tell me that she has anxiety and depression, and how yoga could help with this.
I'm not a doctor, but I know from personal experience that yoga has helped me in many different facets of my life, including emotional and mental health.
Here's a short little article on this if you need some 'scientific' proof but I really suggest you trying it for yourself, be open to exploring and work with a teacher who's been through it to help guide you.

A growing number of studies indicate that yoga may be a beneficial treatment for mental health issues such as anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder.
