Most longevity talk is longevity washing.
I was in Berlin teaching medical students at the Charité, and I did not start with protocols. I started with the definition, because the word has been taken over by people selling shelves and calling it medicine.
Longevity is not sickcare. Sickcare treats you once something has already broken.
It is not healthcare either. Healthcare keeps the label, not always the promise.
Longevity is the fifty shades in between. The years where nothing hurts yet and everything is already happening. That in-between is where science kicks in, and where medicine belongs.
And skin is the basic of all of it.
Roughly two square metres. Your largest organ, and the only one you read every single day without a lab or a device. Nearly every hallmark of ageing runs there too: cellular senescence, mitochondrial decline, collagen loss, low-grade inflammation. Skin is the dashboard of the longevity funnel. A dashboard does not fix anything. It tells you whether the system underneath is working.
Here is what makes that in-between so easy to ignore: DNA damage does not hurt. Your skin has no receptors for it. No sunburn does not mean no damage. The redness is the inflammation hours later. The damage came first.
So skin is not cared for. Skin is trained. Protecting cells, supporting repair, lowering the daily load before it compounds. A protocol, not a routine. Not a beauty project. A responsibility.
The last slide is the one to save. Skin findings that can point to something internal. Not a self-diagnosis tool, a reason to look closer. The diagnosis belongs to a physician.
All of it, unpacked properly, is in my book Skin Longevity (Ullstein Verlag).
Where do you see the most longevity washing right now?
Me lecturing at the Charite Berlin, defining longevity for medical students: not sickcare, not healthcare, but the years in between where nothing hurts yet and ageing is already under way.
