Somewhere today, a child is ringing a bell.

She's ringing it because her last treatment is done. Her hair is growing back. Her mother is crying the good kind of crying.

And it all started with one small, ordinary moment: someone noticed something wasn't right, asked the right question, and took her to the right place, early.

That's the whole secret. Childhood cancer is curable. When it's caught early and referred to a proper treatment centre, up to 8 in 10 children survive and go on to live full lives school, football, birthdays, futures.

Not luck. Not magic. Just early.

This September, the world marks Childhood Cancer Awareness Month and the Global Week for Action on NCDs. At PBOHI, we're a youth-led team opening this month with hope, not fear because hope, well informed, saves lives.

Your role is simple:
✅ Wear gold and tell people why.
✅ Kindly Share this post it may reach the family still guessing.
✅ Know the signs lasting fever, unusual lumps, easy bruising, sudden weight loss, a white glow in a child's eye.

Don't wait it out. Get it checked. Get referred.

Everyone has a role. Yours might be the message that gets a child to the right place, in time.

Detected early.
Referred right.
Cured

Some children are wrongly called outcasts or isolated.

Not because they did anything wrong, but sometimes simply because the people around them do not understand what they are going through.

That was one of the realities that stayed with us as we gathered on 22nd August 2026 for the Childhood Cancer Awareness and Early Detection Workshop.

Ellaniel Foundation at the Helm, together with Peter Bryan Onco-Health Initiative(PBOHI) and a host of other committed partners, brought together health practitioners, community leaders, survivors, advocates and others who simply came to learn, share and better understand childhood cancer.

Our Lead Trainer, . Francine Kouya, helped take us through the reality of childhood cancer in Cameroon the common types, the statistics, and some of the myths and misconceptions that still exist.

And there were things many of us needed to hear clearly.

✅Childhood cancer is
not contagious.

🎗️A child with cancer cannot simply pass it on to another child.

✅It is not a death sentence.

🎗️And no, it does not happen simply because a child eats too many sweet things.

These may sound like simple things to say, but misinformation can affect how a child is treated, supported, or even accepted within their own community.

We also reflected on the wider reality.

While survival rates can reach about 80% in high-income countries, they remain around 30% in many low- and middle-income countries.

Resulting from differences in access to early diagnosis and treatment.

There were things to learn.

There were things to unlearn too.

Then came the "Gold March "that marked a launching of the "Gold September" childhood Cancer Awareness month

Led by the Regional Delegate of Public Health for the North-West Region, the Director of Health Services of Nkwen Baptist Hospital Bamenda, the Country Coordinator for World Child Cancer, and the representative of the National Cancer Control Committee, we walked together with a message that stayed with us:

"Inspired to ACT"

Because awareness means little if it does not move us to do something.

To ask questions.

To notice when something is not right.

To speak up.

To help a child get the right attention early enough.

Yesterday was a day of learning, yes.

But more than that, it was a reminder that there's need for action.

And everyone has a role to Play. 💛🎗️

“Who trusts you and why?”

That question stayed with us today. ❤️

Today, the(PBOHI) held its Restitution Workshop under the theme:

Building Trust, Strengthening Care

It was not just another meeting.

It was a moment to pause, look at ourselves, and ask difficult but necessary questions about trust.

We explored the Tree of Trust, the Seven Habitus and the Trust Barometer but what made the conversation special was how quickly these ideas moved from theory into our everyday lives.

We talked about empathy.
We talked about responsibility.
We talked about working together.
We talked about accepting uncertainty.
We talked about failure and learning.
And we talked about how trust grows with time.

Then we brought the conversation home to healthcare and cancer.

Because sometimes, people already have the information.

They know cancer is dangerous.
They have heard about screening.
They have heard about early detection.

But they still hesitate.

Why?

Because knowing is not always enough.

Trust matters.

Trust in the person speaking.
Trust in the health worker.
Trust in the institution.
Trust in the process.
Trust that when you seek help, someone will be there to care.

That is why today's conversation matters so much to our work in Cancer prevention and early detection.

We are deeply grateful to the House of Trust for Peace and Prosperity, at the Catholic University of Central Africa, for supporting this important programme.

We also appreciate the collaborating and implementing organisations involved in this wider initiative of trust building

And to every person who joined us today thank you for bringing your experiences, questions, honesty and willingness to learn.

We leave with one simple reminder:

Trust begins with me.

And if we want to strengthen care, improve early detection and build healthier communities, then we must first become worthy of the trust we are asking people to give us.

"Building Trust.Strengthening Care".

Before people accept healthcare, they first decide whether they can trust it.

Trust is what helps someone believe health information, ask questions without fear, go for screening early, and seek care when it matters most.

This weekend, our team will come together for a Restitution Workshop as we learn, reflect, and grow in building trust within ourselves, our team, and the communities we serve.

We believe that trust is not just a value it is the foundation of better care.

✨✨ Highlights✨✨

On 31 May 2026, young people gathered in Bamenda for an impactful To***co and Lung Health Workshop aimed at unmasking the appeal of to***co and critically discussing the dangers of to***co use, va**ng, and sh**ha consumption.

Participants explored the science of lung health, the harmful effects of to***co, and how the to***co industry targets young people through flavored products, attractive packaging, social media, and influencer marketing.

Key scientific facts shared included;

🛑Over 1.3 billion to***co users worldwide
🛑About 8 million deaths annually
linked to to***co
🛑Approximately 1 in 5 adolescents have tried to***co products
🛑Shisha sessions can expose users to smoke equivalent to up to 100 ci******es
🛑Lung damage often develops silently before symptoms appear

Key presentations highlighted:
✅ The impact of to***co on health
✅ The social consequences of va**ng, sh**ha, and to***co use
✅ Addiction recovery and the importance of support systems
✅ To***co industry tactics and youth targeting

Seriously, while young people must make informed choices, resist peer pressure and social influences, stronger action is also needed from families, communities, and government systems to reduce access to harmful products and protect public health.

We must move beyond awareness to action. Protecting young people from to***co-related harm requires a collective effort involving individuals, families, schools, communities, and policymakers. Everyone has a role to play in prevention, protection, and supporting those seeking to quit.

The workshop concluded with a strong commitment from participants:

I will not start.
I will seek help to stop.
I will protect my family.
I will speak up in my community.
