*PATRIARCHY AND IT'S SYSTEMATIC IMPACT: A CALL FOR BETTER UNDERSTANDING AND VALUE ADDITION TO CULTURE*

*What is Patriarchy?*
Patriarchy is a social system where men hold primary power and predominate in roles of political leadership, moral authority, social privilege, and control of property. In this system, traits, roles, and work associated with men are often valued more highly than those associated with women. It shows up in families, laws, religion, workplaces, and cultural norms.

It doesn’t mean “all men oppress all women.” It describes patterns of power and expectations that affect everyone, including men.

*Key Impacts of Patriarchy*

*1. On Women & Girls*
- *Economic:* Less access to land, credit, and inheritance. Gender pay gaps persist because “women’s work” is often undervalued. In Cameroon, women face high rates of gender-based violence – 34% of women 14-49 have experienced physical violence.
- *Health:* Decisions about reproductive health, education, and mobility are often controlled by male family members. This delays care and limits options.
- *Leadership:* Fewer women in political, business, and community leadership. Policies and services then miss women’s realities.
- *Education:* Cultural norms can prioritize boys’ schooling, especially in crisis areas, exposing girls to child marriage and dropout.

*2. On Men & Boys*
- *Emotional health:* Pressure to be “provider,” “strong,” and “unemotional” discourages men from seeking help for mental health, trauma, or stress. This increases risk of substance use and su***de.
- *Rigid roles:* Boys face stigma if they show interest in caregiving, teaching, or arts. Men who deviate from dominant norms often face social punishment.
- *Risk behavior:* To prove “manhood,” boys may be pushed toward aggression, early sexual activity, or dangerous work.

WHY TRAUMA-INFORMED CARE & STRESS MANAGEMENT MATTER IN SCHOOLS

“You can’t learn when your brain is in survival mode.”

In Cameroon, over 625,737 school-aged children are out of school in the Far North, while 41% of schools in the NW/SW remain closed due to conflict. Across Africa, 1 in 7 adolescents lives with a mental health condition. Trauma-informed care is no longer optional — it is essential for learning, safety, and student well-being.

Trauma and chronic stress affect concentration, behavior, emotional regulation, and academic performance. Many displaced and vulnerable children carry experiences of violence, loss, and instability into the classroom, making learning difficult without proper psychosocial support.

Mental health challenges among young people continue to rise, including anxiety, depression, substance use, and su***de risk. Trauma-informed schools help by creating psychologically safe environments, improving attendance, reducing suspensions, and supporting inclusive education.

With limited access to mental health services in sub-Saharan Africa, schools often become the first and only support system for many children. Training teachers to recognize trauma responses and provide basic emotional support can save lives and build resilience.

Schools in Cameroon and across Africa should integrate trauma-informed care, stress management, teacher training, and school-based screening and referral systems into daily educational practice to support vulnerable learners and protect the future generation.

TRAUMA INFORMED CARE IS A CRUCIAL PART OF THE SCHOOL CARE PROGRAM FOR GOOD INSTITUTIONS

Did you Know 1 in 7 kids lives with a mental health condition. Most go unseen until it’s too late.”
Schools are where kids spend 7+ hours a day. If we’re not screening, we’re missing them.
_Stats:_ 1 in 7 children 0-19 have a mental health condition. 40% of US high school students felt persistent sadness/hopelessness in 2023. 75% of high schoolers have experienced at least 1 adverse childhood experience.

NB: You can’t build inclusive classrooms on top of invisible pain. Trauma and untreated mental health issues are the silent dropout rate, the invisible behavior problem, the reason “one-size-fits-all” teaching fails.

5 Powerful Reasons to Screen Children Regularly in Schools

1. Catch problems before they derail a life
1 in 7 children aged 0-19 live with a mental health condition, and prevalence rose by one-third in 15 years. Early screening in schools catches anxiety, depression, and trauma before they become crisis, dropout, or su***de. Su***de is the leading cause of death for 15-29 year olds.

2. Make inclusive education actually inclusive
A child with PTSD, chronic anxiety, or unprocessed trauma can’t focus, participate, or learn alongside peers. Regular screening identifies these hidden barriers so teachers can adapt lessons, accommodations, and support. Without it, “inclusion” becomes physical presence only.

3. Protect learning and attendance
40% of high school students experienced persistent sadness/hopelessness in 2023. In England, the more school a child misses, the higher their probability of mental ill health. Screening and early support keep kids in class and engaged.

Unaddressed trauma shows up as aggression, withdrawal, self-harm, and absenteeism. 76% of UK teachers report social difficulties and 48% report chronic anxiety regularly in pupils. Early identification lets schools intervene before behavior
