Understanding Herpes Simplex: Causes and Prevention
Herpes simplex is a common viral infection caused by the Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV). There are two main types: HSV-1, which commonly causes cold sores around the mouth, and HSV-2, which usually affects the ge***al area. Once a person becomes infected, the virus remains in the body and may reactivate from time to time.
Causes of Herpes Simplex
✍🏾 Direct Contact with an Infected Person
The virus spreads easily through skin-to-skin contact, especially when sores or blisters are present.
✍🏾 Kissing
Kissing someone with an active cold sore can transmit HSV-1 from one person to another.
✍🏾 S*xual Contact
Herpes can spread through va**nal, oral, or a**l s*x, even when an infected person has no visible symptoms.
✍🏾 Sharing Personal Items
Items such as razors, lip balm, towels, or utensils may occasionally spread the virus if they come into contact with infected sores.
✍🏾 Mother-to-Baby Transmission
A mother with an active ge***al herpes infection can pass the virus to her baby during childbirth.
Prevention
✍🏾 Avoid Contact with Sores
Do not touch, kiss, or have s*xual contact with someone who has active herpes sores.
✍🏾 Practice Safe S*x
Using condoms can reduce the risk of transmission, although it does not provide complete protection.
✍🏾Avoid Sharing Personal Items
Personal items that come into contact with the mouth or skin should not be shared.
✍🏾 Maintain Good Hygiene
Wash your hands regularly, especially after touching affected areas.
✍🏾 Be Open with Partners
Informing partners about a herpes infection helps both individuals take precautions and reduce transmission.
Note
Herpes simplex is very common and many infected people live healthy, normal lives. Although there is no cure, antiviral medications can help reduce symptoms, shorten outbreaks, and lower the risk of spreading the virus.
