CHEMOTHERAPY DOES NOT KILL IF WELL ADMINISTERED/TAKEN… Part 2

People always ask… “Why does chemotherapy cause so many adverse effects?”

Simple answer… it is a drug.
A foreign substance to the body, just like any other drug. So yes, it will have side effects.

What makes chemotherapy different is its mechanism of action, in simple terms what it does in the body.

First, what is cancer?

Cancer is a disease of the genes where abnormal cells grow uncontrollably and can spread to other parts of the body.

Now, chemotherapy works by affecting cells in different ways depending on the drug. It can interfere with DNA formation, damage DNA, or stop cells from dividing.

So you can already see the issue… these drugs are not very selective. They mostly target rapidly dividing cells.

The problem is, some normal cells also divide fast. That is why we see side effects in areas like the digestive system, the blood, the skin and hair, and sometimes the nerves and heart.

But here is the key thing…

These side effects are not a surprise. Doctors and pharmacists already know them and, in many cases, know how to prevent or manage them.

So they are not just given blindly. They are controlled.

So guys, you can see clearly that…

CHEMOTHERAPY DOES NOT KILL.

When properly used, it actually saves lives. END!!!

CHEMOTHERAPY KILLS …. Part 1

There is this thing we hear people saying Chemotherapy (systemic or treatment that passes through blood circulation) kills. This has made so many patients, who have been diagnosed of Cancers, preferring to go to the village for traditional treatment. Technically, any drug you take is chemotherapy because you are taking chemicals to treat a particular ailment. But, know that chemotherapy is meant only for cancer treatment.

Any drug, when taken out of its required dose, can kill a patient, coz a drug if you want to take it etymologically, means poison. So why call it a drug then?

Well, that’s because scientists/pharmacists have studied the drug, analyzed it’s benefits, they have studied its dosage, when it is toxic and when it is safe, before putting it into the market. Hence, considered safe. That’s the same process through which chemotherapy drugs have been subjected to. So Chemotherapy drugs, when given in their right doses, is safe. So no worries.

So, why do we give Chemotherapy drugs to treat Cancers.

Let me start by outlining something. The true treatment for Cancers is surgery. Because a cancer starts in a fixed/localized region before spreading outwards. So in order to prevent spread, it is excised. But what happens when it has spread? That’s where chemotherapy sets in.
Chemotherapy now comes in to destroy all what has spread from point zero. Below are the reasons why we give chemo.

- as neoadjuvant therapy: this simply means we give chemo before surgery (let’s not forget that surgery is the best treatment for cancers). At times the tumor/cancer is too large that excising the tumor can be cumbersome. So chemo here is used to reduce the size of the tumor so that it can be easily excised.

- as adjuvant therapy: once the tumor has been excised, it isn’t always 100% certainty that all cancer cells/tissue have been removed, because it is difficult to determine the extent of the cancer, so chemotherapy here will destroy any remaining cancer cells/tissue.

- Chemotherapy is given in non solid tumors like blood cancers etc, because the primary cancer isn’t a solid mass.

- at times when the cancer has already reached an advanced stage like stage 4 cancers, chemotherapy will be given to provide comfort for the patient. Like relieving pain, esthetics, because a patient needs the utmost comfort he can receive.

Imagine buying a bag of potatoes from the market. After your purchase, you store the bag in the food storage area of your house. Under normal and suitable conditions, the potatoes will not rot. However, for the potatoes to spoil, specific internal and external factors must be present.

Factors like pests, moisture, and fungi are common causes of spoilage in potatoes. It's important to regularly inspect your bag of potatoes for any signs of decay. If you find a rotten potato, the best course of action is to remove it immediately to prevent it from spreading its rot to the others.

Imagine you need to travel for a while, and there’s no one to look after your bag of potatoes. If you leave behind one rotten potato, it can soon contaminate the others. By the time you return home, the entire bag of potatoes could spoil. That would be quite disappointing, wouldn’t it?

This is a close description of how the cancer process occurs.

A few weeks ago, I promised to discuss breast cancer. I’ve been searching for accessible ways to make the post both informative and easy to understand, which is why it's taken me some time to get it ready. Before diving into the topic of breast cancer, I believe it would be helpful to first explain how cancer develops. To illustrate this, I decided to share the story about the bag of potatoes.

Think of a potato like it's an organ in your body. Just like cells can fix genetic mistakes or take themselves out of the game through a process called apoptosis to stop those mistakes from spreading, it's all about keeping things in check! Sometimes, both internal and external factors can stop cells from fixing themselves properly. When that happens, the cells end up multiplying with mistakes, throwing off the balance in the body.

Once these cells start acting out of sync with the natural process, they create their own little environment and start influencing other cells to adopt their way of thinking. This is how cancer spreads or metastasizes.

One interesting thing about cancer is that the primary tumor has a really good lawyer. This lawyer makes sure that the metastasized organs end up taking the blame for what the primary tumor has done. I thought about using an example related to pastors and their churches to illustrate this point, but I decided it might stir up some controversy. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Don’t miss out on part 2 of this post! I'll be diving into the important topic of breast cancer, so stay tuned for insights you won't want to overlook.

🎀 October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month 🎀

This month, let's come together to spread awareness, encourage early detection, and show support for the millions affected by breast cancer.

Early detection can save lives. Simple actions like regular self-exams, scheduling mammograms, and knowing the warning signs can make all the difference.

💗 What can you do?

Schedule your mammogram or remind someone you love to get checked.
Share a post to raise awareness and encourage others to learn about early detection.
Donate to reputable breast cancer research organizations making strides to find a cure.
Every action counts, and together, we can help bring hope to survivors, fighters, and those we’ve lost. Let’s make this a month of awareness, education, and support. 💪🎗️
Hopital Gyneco-Obstetrique and Pediatrique are carrying out a screening campaign. from the 2nd to the 4th. Men are also invited to partake in the screening, coz Breast cancer can affect men.
