Antenatal Care (ANC) visits are very important for women during pregnancy. They help protect the health of both the mother and the baby. During ANC visits, healthcare workers check the baby’s growth, monitor the mother’s health, and detect problems early, such as high blood pressure, anemia, or infections. ANC also provides important services like vaccinations, nutrition advice, iron and folic acid supplements, and education on safe delivery and newborn care. Regular ANC visits help reduce pregnancy complications and increase the chances of a healthy pregnancy and safe childbirth.

What causes Rh incompatibility?

Rh incompatibility occurs when a woman who’s Rh-negative becomes pregnant with a fetus with Rh-positive blood. With Rh incompatibility, your immune system reacts to this difference (known as incompatibility) and creates antibodies. These antibodies drive an immune system attack against the fetus’s red blood cells, which your body thinks are foreign objects. This is called Rh sensitization. Your pregnancy care provider can prevent this from happening by giving you a shot (injection) of immune globulin. Complications don’t usually happen during a woman’s first pregnancy. This is because it’s unlikely that your blood will mix with the fetus’s blood until delivery, which means antibodies won’t form until after the fetus is born. However, your provider still tests your Rh factor even if it’s your first pregnancy.

Rh incompatibility becomes a problem if you become pregnant a second time and have another Rh-positive fetus. In this case, your body will produce antibodies. These antibodies put the second fetus at risk for complications. Once your body realizes the fetus is Rh-positive, antibodies can pass into the fetus’s blood and attack its red blood cells. This is called Rh disease. Rh disease can be life-threatening for the fetus.

Preeclampsia is a complication of pregnancy. With preeclampsia, you might have high blood pressure, high levels of protein in urine that indicate kidney damage (proteinuria), or other signs of organ damage. Preeclampsia usually begins after 20 weeks of pregnancy in women whose blood pressure had previously been in the standard range.
Left untreated, preeclampsia can lead to serious even fatal complications for both the mother and baby.
Early delivery of the baby is often recommended. The timing of delivery depends on how severe the preeclampsia is and how many weeks pregnant you are. Before delivery, preeclampsia treatment includes careful monitoring and medications to lower blood pressure and manage complications.
Preeclampsia may develop after delivery of a baby, a condition known as postpartum preeclampsia.

Cerebral palsy (CP) is a group of disorders affecting movement and posture, stemming from brain damage occurring before, during, or shortly after birth. In babies, CP may manifest as developmental delays, unusual muscle tone (either too stiff or too floppy), and difficulties with movement and posture. While the brain damage doesn't progress, the symptoms can change over time as the child grows and develops.

Encephalocele is a neural tube defect characterized by sac-like protrusions of the brain and the membranes that cover it through openings in the skull. These defects are caused by failure of the neural tube to close completely during fetal development. Encephaloceles cause a groove down the middle of the skull, or between the forehead and nose, or on the back side of the skull. The severity of encephalocele varies, depending on its location.[1]

Hemolytic disease of the newborn (HDN) is a blood disorder in a fetus or newborn infant. In some infants, it can be fatal.

Normally, red blood cells (RBCs) last for about 120 days in the body. In this disorder, RBCs in the blood are destroyed quickly and thus do not last as long.

Causes
During pregnancy, RBCs from the unborn baby can cross into the mother's blood through the placenta. HDN occurs when the immune system of the mother sees a baby's RBCs as foreign. Antibodies then develop against the baby's RBCs. These antibodies attack the RBCs in the baby's blood and cause them to break down too early.

HDN may develop when a mother and her unborn baby have different blood types. The types are based on small substances (antigens) on the surface of the blood cells.

There is more than one way in which the unborn baby's blood type may not match the mother's.

A, B, AB, and O are the 4 major blood group antigens or types. This is the most common form of a mismatch. In most cases, this is not very severe.
Rh is short for the "rhesus" antigen or blood type. People are either positive or negative for this antigen. If the mother is Rh-negative and the baby in the womb has Rh-positive cells, her antibodies to the Rh antigen can cross the placenta and cause very severe anemia in the baby. It can be prevented in most cases.
There are other, much less common, types of mismatch between minor blood group antigens. Some of these can also cause severe problems.
