𝟏𝟔 𝐬𝐞𝐩𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐫𝐞 𝟐𝟎𝟏𝟔 – 𝟏𝟔 𝐬𝐞𝐩𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐫𝐞 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔 : 𝟏𝟎 𝐚𝐧𝐬 𝐝𝐞𝐬 𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐦𝐢𝐞̀𝐫𝐞𝐬 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐚𝐮 𝐌𝐈𝐂𝐄𝐈
Il y a dix ans, jour pour jour, les premiers patients franchissaient les portes du futur MICEI.
Ces images d’archives nous ramènent au 16 septembre 2016, à une période où le Magrabi ICO Cameroon Eye Institute était encore en pleine installation.
Les machines venaient d’être mises en place. Les premiers tests étaient effectués. Les meubles et les installations étaient provisoires. Certains équipements étaient encore dans leurs caisses.
Tout était loin d’être terminé… mais une chose était déjà bien réelle : la volonté de soigner, de servir et de redonner espoir à travers la santé visuelle.
Ce jour-là, nous avons accueilli nos tout premiers patients, dans le cadre de consultations gratuites. Ils étaient principalement originaires d’Obak et des villages environnants. Certains étaient également venus de Yaoundé et d’autres localités, après avoir entendu parler de ce nouvel hôpital où des consultations étaient offertes gratuitement.
Pendant près de six mois, avant l’ouverture officielle de l’hôpital le 29 mars 2017, ces consultations ont permis de poser les premières pierres d’une aventure qui allait profondément transformer l’accès aux soins oculaires au Cameroun.
En regardant ces images, on découvre aussi quelques-uns des pionniers qui sont toujours avec nous aujourd’hui. D’autres ont depuis poursuivi leur chemin, mais nous avons conservé avec eux des relations empreintes de respect, de reconnaissance et d’amitié.
Ces photographies ne montrent pas seulement des machines, des caisses ou des installations provisoires. Elles racontent un commencement.
Elles nous rappellent qu’avant les grandes réalisations, il y a toujours des premiers pas. Avant les statistiques, il y a des visages. Avant les succès, il y a des femmes et des hommes qui acceptent de croire en une vision.
Et surtout, avant tout ce que le MICEI représente aujourd’hui, il y avait ces premiers patients qui nous ont fait confiance.
Dix ans après ces premières consultations, notre reconnaissance va à toutes celles et tous ceux qui ont contribué à cette histoire : les pionniers, les équipes, les partenaires, les patients et les communautés d’Obak et d’ailleurs.
L’aventure a commencé simplement. Mais elle portait déjà une ambition immense : préserver la vue et améliorer la vie. 👁️💙

Ten years ago, on this very day, the first patients walked through the doors of what would become MICEI.
These archive images take us back to September 16, 2016, when the Magrabi ICO Cameroon Eye Institute was still being set up.
The machines had just been installed. The first tests were underway. The furniture and facilities were temporary. Some equipment was still packed in crates.
The hospital was far from complete… but one thing was already firmly in place: the commitment to provide care, serve the community and restore hope through eye health.
That day, we welcomed our very first patients for free consultations. Most came from Obak and the surrounding villages. Others travelled from Yaoundé and different parts of the country after hearing about the new eye hospital offering free consultations.
For nearly six months, before the hospital’s official opening on March 29, 2017, these consultations laid the foundations for a journey that would significantly contribute to improving access to eye care in Cameroon.
These images also bring back memories of some of the pioneers who are still with us today. Others have since moved on to new chapters, but the bonds we built with them remain strong, grounded in respect, gratitude and friendship.
These photographs show more than machines, crates and temporary facilities. They tell the story of a beginning.
They remind us that every major achievement starts with first steps. Before statistics, there are faces. Before success, there are women and men who believe in a vision.
And before everything MICEI represents today, there were those first patients who placed their trust in us.
Ten years after those first consultations, we express our deepest gratitude to everyone who helped shape this journey: the pioneers, our teams, partners, patients and the communities of Obak and beyond.
The journey began simply. But it already carried a great ambition: to preserve sight and improve lives. 👁️💙
