Henry Nkumbe

Henry Nkumbe Ophthalmologist specialising in Vitreoretinal and cataract Surgery. Three things fueled his desire to become an eye specialist on that day.

CEO at MICEI
Ophtalmologiste camerounais spécialisé dans la chirurgie vitréo-rétinienne, la chirurgie de la cataracte1 et la chirurgie réfractive. Dr Henry Nkumbe’s journey to becoming an ophthalmologist started at the age of 13, when his mother took him to see an eye specialist at the Presbyterian Hospital at Ndounge, in the Littoral region of Cameroon. He received his first prescription glasses,

which corrected his myopia, giving him perfect vision for the first time
By the time they got to the hospital at 6AM, there were anywhere between 200 and 300 people all waiting to be seen by the same eye specialist. Henry realized for the first time that there were many people who also had eye problems and something needed to be done….

World Ophthalmologist Day was this weekend, on Saturday 08.08.2026, and it has me looking back. 👁️

I first met Prof Henry S. Adala in Munich in 1998, fresh out of medical school, at a course in tropical ophthalmology. A year later I followed him to the University of Nairobi to train as an eye surgeon.

His story is a remarkable one. He was the very first postgraduate to qualify from the University of Nairobi's ophthalmology programme, and under his leadership, the department grew into a WHO Collaborating Centre for the Prevention of Blindness, drawing trainees from across Africa.

He gave me my foundation in this beautiful profession — patiently, and by example. The last time I saw him was in 2012, when he came all the way to Madagascar to visit me. I think of him often.

Thank you, Prof Adala — teacher, mentor, and role model.

And thank you to all who train the next generation of eye surgeons.

The gift you pass on is sight itself. 💙

Thank you so much Chef Ngwa Catering Service for these incredibly kind and generous words. Reading your post truly touched my heart, and I am deeply humbled by your thoughtful tribute.

Thank you so much for visiting us at MICEI and for taking the time to share your experience! We truly appreciate you giving our Vision Corridor a try. It was designed specifically so that anyone can self-test their sight easily, even without an eye specialist present.
This is currently a pilot project launched at the Magrabi ICO Cameroon Eye Institute car park to allow drivers to check their vision while waiting for passengers undergoing consultations. Moving forward, our goal is to partner with local councils and organizations to roll out these free self-testing corridors across high-traffic public spaces—like markets, car parks, churches, and mosques—so eye care awareness reaches every corner of our community.
Thank you for helping us spread the word and empowering others to prioritize their eye health! 🙏 eye care is for everyone.

Yesterday, I shared a post about my visit to Magrabi ICO Cameroon Eye Institute, the eye hospital in Oback.
I’m truly overwhelmed by the number of people who have reached out asking for the location and directions. Just to be clear, that post was not an advertisement I simply wanted to share something good I experienced so others could benefit from it.
Seeing so many people show interest and take action has genuinely made me happy. This is what it’s all about sharing value, spreading awareness, and helping one another grow.
Thank you all for the trust and positive response 🙏
