I went looking for the BIG acupuncture studies because I was getting tired of seeing the same “5 small trials suggest acupuncture may help…” posts.

And then I found this one.

1,162 people with chronic low back pain were randomized to acupuncture, sham acupuncture, or conventional therapy.

At 6 months:

🪡 Acupuncture: 47.6% response
🪡 Sham acupuncture: 44.2%
💊 Conventional therapy: 27.4%

Here’s the part that makes this study so interesting:

Real acupuncture did not significantly outperform sham.

But both needling groups substantially outperformed conventional therapy.

So what exactly are we measuring when our acupuncture “placebo” still involves needling the body?

I don’t think this study gives us an easy answer.

I think it gives us a much better question.

Anyway… I’ve started reading the big acupuncture trials and now I’m in a rabbit hole. 🐇📚🪡

What condition should I investigate next?

She really said “I took my own before and after photos” and then came back with RECEIPTS 😭😂

Nothing quite prepares you for seeing your work through your patient’s camera roll.

✨ Cosmetic acupuncture
✨ Patient-taken photos
✨ My ego for the rest of the day: 📈

Apparently I got the magic in me. 😂🪄

“Traditional” doesn’t mean stuck in the past. 🇨🇳

This is extracorporeal shockwave therapy being used inside a TCM hospital in China.

It uses mechanical pressure waves as a modern rehabilitation treatment for musculoskeletal conditions, and judging by this Canadian College of Acupuncture and TCM student’s reaction… you can definitely feel it. 😂

One of my favourite things about studying TCM in China was seeing just how comfortably traditional Chinese medicine and modern medical technology exist under the same roof.

Acupuncture. Cupping. Moxa. Tuina. And then… this thing. 😂

Follow for more TCM you won’t see in a textbook. 🇨🇳
