Every Life Deserves a Chance Before Birth. 💙

This is Elias, now a healthy 4-month-old baby from Yemen.

At 27 weeks of pregnancy, he was diagnosed with severe bilateral chylothorax with hydrops, a life-threatening condition with a mortality exceeding 98% without fetal intervention.

At the Maternal Fetal Institute, we performed a fetal surgery with the placement of bilateral thoracic shunts, giving Elias the opportunity to survive and continue growing safely in the womb.

His mother later delivered him by Cesarean section at 35–36 weeks, and today, seeing Elias thriving is the greatest reward any fetal surgeon can receive.

Every successful fetal surgery is a reminder that timely diagnosis, innovation, multidisciplinary teamwork, and hope can change the course of a life before birth.

This is why we continue fighting for life before birth.

In 2006, I performed my first fetoscopic fetal surgery: a laser procedure for Twin-to-Twin Transfusion Syndrome (TTTS).

At that moment, I could never have imagined where that journey would lead.

Today, in 2026, after more than 1,800 fetal surgeries and fetal therapies, I remain guided by exactly the same purpose:

To give every unborn baby the greatest possible chance at life.

Every surgery represents much more than a procedure.
It represents a family waiting with hope, a multidisciplinary team working as one, and a relentless commitment to innovation, compassion, and excellence.

Medicine evolves. Technology advances.
But one thing has never changed:

Hoy, en Burjeel Medical City (Abu Dabi), nuestro equipo multidisciplinario completó con éxito una de las intervenciones perinatales más complejas de la medicina fetal.

Desde la oclusión traqueal fetoscópica (FETO) para tratar una hernia diafragmática congénita grave hasta la cesárea, el procedimiento EXIT, la intubación fetal asistida por fetoscopia, la retirada del balón y la estabilización neonatal avanzada: cada paso se llevó a cabo con un único objetivo: brindar a este bebé la mejor oportunidad de vida posible.

Fue especialmente significativo compartir este hito con tres médicos colombianos que trabajan juntos lejos de casa:

Today at Burjeel Medical City, Abu Dhabi, our multidisciplinary team successfully completed one of the most complex perinatal interventions in fetal medicine.

From fetoscopic tracheal occlusion (FETO) for severe congenital diaphragmatic hernia to Cesarean delivery, EXIT procedure, fetoscopic-assisted fetal intubation, balloon removal, and advanced neonatal stabilization, every step was performed with one goal: to give this baby the best possible chance at life.

It was especially meaningful to share this milestone with three Colombian physicians working together far from home:
