When I was in the shopping mall, I started thinking about what it actually means to constantly buy new things.
Not in a judgmental way. I mean, I also enjoy beautiful things. But I noticed how quickly “I want this” turns into “I need this” — and how easy it is to believe that more will somehow make us feel more complete.
Aparigraha, one of the Yamas from Patanjali’s Eight Limbs of Yoga, reminds me that freedom is not found in holding on, collecting more, or filling every empty space. Only when there is emptiness, there is space to receive.
And there is another thing: maybe we do not truly own anything. Not our things, not even our body or this life.
To give, receive, and trust the flow of life. To make space for the unknown to visit us.
This is Aparigraha as I experience it.
