The sun had not yet risen when Mateo opened his eyes.
There was no breakfast, no time to think about games. Only a responsibility far too heavy for a child.
Carefully, he picked up his baby brother. So small… so fragile… completely dependent on him.
The road ahead was long.
Dust, stones, and forgotten paths stretched across the rural land where they lived. Every step was a risk: wild animals, dangerous trails, the suffocating heat of the day, or sudden tropical storms.
But Mateo could not stop.
He walked miles carrying his little brother and an even heavier burden: the fear of not finding food.
The fear of returning empty-handed.
The fear of failing.
His bare feet burned against the hot ground.
His dry throat begged for water he didn’t have.
And still, he kept going.
Because at home, there were more children waiting.
Waiting for food.
Waiting for hope.
Mateo was not just a child.
He was a protector.
A provider.
The only support his family had.
And even if the world chose not to see him, he kept fighting…
because for his siblings, giving up was never an option.
