🌙🌸🦋 Believe it or not, one of the most common questions I get as a yoga teacher! Not about my travels or retreats, not how people feel in my classes, not about my contribution to the world, or wellness.. it’s about how much money my work makes.
Don’t get me wrong, it’s a valid pragmatic question in today’s times. Although I come from a culture where it’s not really appropriate to ask someone how much they make, and especially not a stranger. And I ultimately know, it’s not that people are actually concerned about my (or other yoga teachers’) financial situation. It’s a way to devalue someone’s work.
Imagine for a moment, if instead, we lived in a world where one’s “value” in terms of their work and occupation is measured in their contribution to society. Their effect on the planet and Mother Earth. Whether they put a smile or a frown on the faces of people they interact with. Whether their job allows for a work-life balance. Whether they are healthier, or getting sicker due to their work. Or maybe most important, how good they feel about themselves, their job or contribution, their day-to-day demeanor, their own skin.
Now, while yoga is considered a multi-billion dollar industry (or is it trillion now?!), those are not realistic numbers that go to your neighborhood yoga teacher. They reflect the wellness industry beaming with products and ruled by corporations. So yes, the finances are very fluctuating and an active yoga teacher needs to be in some level of entrepreneur mindset (which is why we teacher our course in our ). And you don’t feel your most awesome self every day. And not everyone will like you (a crucial and super important lesson for all ).
The value is there, so much deeper than words can describe. So yes, I am proud of what I make as a yoga teacher.
