As my time as U.S. Ambassador comes to a close, i want to take this opportunity to express my heartfelt thanks and bid farewell to the people of this remarkable country. Representing the United States here has been an honor and a privilege, and I leave with deep appreciation for Cabo Verde and confidence in the future of our partnership.
My family and I have been fortunate to experience this country in ways that will stay with us forever. In Santiago, from Praia to Tarrafal, we learned about tradition and resilience through basket weaving and the history of pano di terra, and from rural communities such as the Rabelados, we gained a deeper understanding of religious freedom. In São Nicolau, reading Chiquinho while spending time on the island gave new meaning to Cabo Verdean identity and literature.
In Santo Antão, Wayne and I hiked its breathtaking trails, and on Fogo, we still remember hiking the volcano together with our children in 2008, a memory that continues to shape how special this country is to our family. From Sal and São Vicente, where we learned more about Cabo Verde’s rich biodiversity, to evenings spent watching films and attending cultural events around Praia, culture was always a bridge for connection. I will never forget learning to dance batuku and celebrating Cabo Verde’s 50 years of independence, moments that captured the pride, history, and spirit of this country.
I am proud of what we accomplished together professionally. From Cabo Verde’s leadership in hosting Obangame Express and strengthening our military cooperation, to breaking ground on the new U.S. Embassy, and promoting English education, youth engagement, and people-to-people ties, our partnership has continued to grow in meaningful ways. We have also worked to support and promote U.S. businesses in Cabo Verde, fostering economic opportunities and deepening our commercial ties. At the same time, it was often the simple moments that mattered most - practicing yoga with friends, hiking trails in Serra Malagueta, or sharing conversations with students, artists, and community leaders.
More than the places or programs, it is the Cabo Verdean people who will remain with us. Your warmth, creativity, resilience, and generosity define this country.
Thank you, Cabo Verde, for welcoming my family and me. We leave with gratitude, lasting friendships, and hope for all that lies ahead.
