🚒 A special reunion at INTERSCHUTZ!

CDTC Co-Founder Kiki Kuhnert recently met with former CDTC participants Nico Schiffbauer and his wife Fabienne, as well as Raphael Jordan and his wife Laura. They are both former firefighters and participants in our dolphin-assisted therapy program, at the world’s leading trade fair for fire and rescue services in Hannover.

What made this meeting especially meaningful was a shared commitment to supporting firefighters who suffer from psychological injuries as a result of their service. Together, we hope to contribute to greater awareness and future initiatives that help first responders facing these invisible challenges.

We are proud of Nico and Raphael and grateful for their dedication to helping others. 💙

Sargassum made its way into our lagoons again! 🌿🌊

While it can be a seasonal visitor, the seaweed also provides a natural source of enrichment for our dolphins. In our ocean-fed lagoons, the dolphins often investigate, carry, and play with the floating seaweed, encouraging curiosity and other natural behaviors. Moments like these are a reminder of the dynamic connection between the lagoon and the surrounding ocean.

Ending this Period 10 journey with peace, growth, and dolphin smiles.🐬✨💙💛

Humor in paediatric care isn’t just a distraction.
It changes behavior. 💛

A 2021 study, 17 years after the opening of CDTC, published in the Journal of Paediatric Psychology followed 120 children with chronic illnesses, including diabetes, asthma, and cystic fibrosis, to better understand how they coped with treatment and medical care.

The results were fascinating.

Kids who used bonding humor or perspective humor weren’t just happier or “in better spirits.” They were actually more resilient, trusted their clinicians more, and followed treatment plans more consistently.

Children who joked and connected with nurses, doctors, and therapists were rated more motivated to work with by medical staff, and they even missed fewer treatments.

Why does humor matter this much?

Because humor does several important clinical things at the same time:
✨ It reframes the threat
✨ It helps regulate emotions
✨ It creates relational safety
✨ It reduces fear during difficult procedures

When a child laughs with you, something shifts.

They’re no longer just a patient being treated. They become part of the process. They participate in what’s happening to them — and participation changes adherence.

We often talk about humor as “good bedside manner,” but this research suggests something much deeper:
Humor can act as a bridge between fear and cooperation.

In paediatric therapy and healthcare, connection is never separate from treatment.
Sometimes the laughter is part of the treatment itself. 🤍
At CDTC we know. For 22 years!

Thank you for underlining what we knew from day one. At CDTC we make hard work look like fun.

🐬Do you remember what dolphin groups are called? Here are some facts to help you:

🌐Dolphins don’t just live in simple groups, they are part of complex, ever-changing social networks shaped by learning, cooperation, and family connections.

👥They rely on teamwork to hunt, protect each other, and care for their young. Many female dolphins—like sisters—stay closely connected.

💪These strong bonds, combined with their flexible social groups, make dolphin societies both adaptive and deeply connected.
